Moonlight Roses

A/N: the segment beginning and ending in "~" is Beatrix's thought.

It was midnight. The full moon glowed silently down in the garden, where General Beatrix sat on a white wooden bench, studying a rosebush closely. Her eyes fell upon one rose: red, with dewdrops glistening in the moonlight upon its lacy petals. It was perfect, nothing torn, no discoloration: it was a solid dark red. The others on the bush could not compare with it.

~"I am the rose: the red rose. The bloodred petals symbolize the bloodshed of the hundreds who have fallen to me, and yet, it also symbolizes the same blood that courses through my veins, to remind me that I am human, and I am mortal. The petals are soft and delicate, beautiful to behold. And yet, the stem of such a beautiful plant is equipped with thorns: sharp and ready to defend. Only those that handle the rose with care will be able to hold it, me, close and smell the beautiful fragrance and behold its, my, beauty. The stem supports the rose, as my strength supports my beauty. Without the stem, my strength, the beauty, the flower, would wither and shrivel away, never to be seen or loved again. And in the morn, when the sun shines, the dewdrops will be dried away by the sun, such as my tears were dried away when Steiner was there to comfort me after I saw my wrongdoings. Steiner... he is the sun."~

Beatrix sat, pondering for a while. Then she stood up and turned, suprised to see Steiner. He was not wearing his usual armor, but instead a navy blue suit. He was holding something in his left arm, careful not to let Beatrix see it.

"Beatrix..." he said, blushing. "May I talk to you for a moment?"
"I was just off to bed..." Beatrix said, her voice trailing off.
"Then perhaps...may I walk you to your room?"
"Yes, I suppose"

Steiner offered her his right arm and they walked to Beatrix's room. Steiner was silent until they got to her door.
"Beatrix..." Steiner said, turning to her and blushing again slightly.
"Yes, Steiner?"
"For a while now, Beatrix, I have had strange feelings. It was not until last night that I realized what they were. Beatrix...I love you"
At this Beatrix was shocked. The emotion she had felt back in the gardens flooded back to her, and she realized that she truly loved him back.
"Oh Steiner..."
Steiner smiled. "Beatrix, as a symbol of my love, I give you this brooch"
He put something cold into her hand and smiled.
Opening her hand, she saw a ruby brooch, shaped like a red rose. It glittered in the soft candle light in the castle corridor. She smiled.
"I will think of you whenever I wear it."
"I hope you will Beatrix, because I love you."
With that, Steiner embraced Beatrix and they kissed in the dim light of Alexandria Castle.
