When Hatake Sakumo returns home late from a mission one night, he finds his five-year old son asleep in the lounge, curled in the corner of a large armchair, his small fists clutching at the blanket that Yuu - one of his dog summons who looks after him when Sakumo's away – must have pulled over him.
It's the early hours of the morning but Sakumo isn't really surprised to find Kakashi there, he always waits up for him the night he's due back from a mission, terrified that one day he might not come back the way so many of his friends parents don't. Despite Yuu's reassurance however Sakumo knows she can never get Kakashi to stop worrying and just go to bed, which in turn causes problems for her as he knows that her puppy Pakkun generally refuses to go to sleep without Kakashi.
His son's worry concerns him a little, but there's not much he can say anymore to easy the boys anxiety. Smiling sadly he deposits his bag on the couch and gently lifts his son into his arms, balancing him on his hip. Kakashi stirs a little, automatically wrapping his arms around his father's neck and burying his face tiredly into the crook of his neck.
He comes around a little more as Sakumo puts him into bed and pulls the covers over him, and he smiles sleepily up at him as the blankets are tucked under his chin, "You came back," he murmurs, yawning and struggling to keep his eyes open.
Sakumo ruffles his hair and smiles back, telling him – as he always does –that he'll always come back for him. Kakashi breaks out another little smile and frees his arms from the sheets, reaching up to hug his father.
As he releases Kakashi and sits back up Sakumo hears Yuu pad into the room behind him as he watches his son snuggle back down under the sheets, still trying to keep his eyes open and yawning.
Holding Pakkun by the scruff of his neck, Yuu rises up, puts her front paws on the edge of the mattress and placing the young pup beside Kakashi where he cuddles close to the young Hatake.
Wearily Sakumo leans forwards, planting a kiss on Kakashi's forehead and patting Pakkun's head before he rises and turns to leave, wondering just how long he really will keep returning from missions.
