The first words Mary Poppins ever spoke to the first family she ever nannied for were, "I'm Mary Poppins and I'm going to fix everything." The mother had been to tired to object and Mary hadn't taken no for an answer. That was how she had come by her first position as a nanny. The children were dazzled by her magic bag and how it seemed to hold everything (which it truly did).

The father, Mary didn't see often. He was bedridden and very ill. The only times Mary saw him was when she brought him his meals when his wife was otherwise unable to. His eldest daughter loved her father dearly and visited him often. At night, whilst Mary was tucking her and her sister in to bed, she would ask Mary if her father was going to get better. Mary would answer that he would because what else was she supposed to say to the child?

She had been with this family for two months when the father passed away. It was early afternoon and he seemed to be doing no better and no worse than he had before. Then he got worse and then he was gone.

The eldest daughter stood in the doorway of her father's room. He started lifelessly at the ceiling and the child bit back tears. Mary wanted to reach out –– to comfort the child. That was when she turned.

"You promised that you were going to fix everything!"
