Slipped Away

Idea based on Slipped Away by Avril Lavigne

I don't own the song, characters or even the idea. Based off the Ave: gers movie. Takes place after the movie, when *Spoilers* Tony flew into the black hole, and Steve's thoughts. It's my first fanfic, and it's really short, but please read and respond. Constructive criticism is appreciated. :)

I stared as Tony shot threw the air carrying a missile. He was carrying it towards the black hole, towards certain death. Yes, he would save millions of lives by carrying into the portal, but he would lose his own. We all knew Tony realised that it was a one way trip, you could tell by the way his suit slightly slowed as he got closer, he was hesitating. Then, almost the same instant I thought he might not go in the portal at all, he sped up and flew into the darkness.

" I know guys with none of that worth ten of you."

I thought about the words I had said to Tony then a day earlier. The words, which I had said full of hatred, full of spite, which he had just proven completely false. I had told a man, one of my men, that he was worthless. A man who, although was stuck up and rude, was doing the bravest thing I would probably ever see. Tony Stark, the man who I had considered weak, cowardly, rude and stuck up was about to give up his life to save the city.

I continued to stare at the sky. I few minutes later the aliens collapsed, but I barely noticed. I was waiting for Tony to come back. After a few more minutes, I called Natasha. I told her to shut the portal down and leave Tony in that hell. I knew he wouldn't be coming back. I was suddenly filled with an ache, an ache I only ever felt once, almost seventy years ago before I flew Red Skull's jet into the ocean. The pain I felt when I realised I would never see Peggy again.

I thought about his girlfriend, what was her name? It was either Penny or Penelope. Pepper, that's it, I thought suddenly. She would never see him again. She would be devastated. I hadn't met her, but she seemed like the only thing that he seemed to actually care about. I slowly looked down, regretting my earlier words. Tony Stark had proved he wasn't worthless. He wasn't a coward like I thought, he just proved to be the bravest man I ever met. I slowly looked back at the portal and gasped. Tony was flying, no falling, from the sky.

I looked to Thor, who was already swinging his hammer to get enough momentum to reach Tony before he hit the ground, but Thor wouldn't make it. Tony was falling fast, he was either dead, or his metal suit was broken and he would crash into the pavement. I bit back a sob when I realised, no matter what, I would never be able to tell Stark how wrong I really was.
