Just a friend

.

The sky was the light blue of a late summer afternoon. Yet, the clouds seemed to be anxious for autumn for they were the colour of steel, being hurried along the sky by a harsh wind. The sun was making feeble attempts to keep its waning power, immersing the grounds in a meagre light. The trees of the forest were staggering with the wind, their branches whipping now and then from its force. The lake's surface, usually so calm and clear, was rippled and dull, awaiting the approach of the first storm of the season.

She was shivering. The wind played with her hair, prying several strands out of their confinement of a careless bun. Annoyed, she pushed them back behind her ears where the wind picked them up again. She was dressed too lightly. Again.

Silently he stepped up behind her. She looked down. She didn't know how to acknowledge him. He opened his robes and drew them around her. She shivered again. This time not from the cold. The world seemed to slow down as he laid his arms around her. She felt safe.

She looked up at the sky again. She noticed the clouds' play, chasing each other across the sky, and she noticed the subtly different shades of colours. They weren't just grey. There were blues, yellows, rosés and whites. Her eyes slowly travelled down to the horizon, observing the lightening nuances of the sky. The trees, still green from summer, seemed to dance with the wind, forming patterns here and there before they dissolved again. The lake's colour wasn't as dull as she had thought at first. She could make out shadows below the surface, causing flowing patches of darker and lighter greens. Then and again a wave reflected the mild sunlight, throwing a teasing sparkle her way.

She closed her eyes and inhaled slowly and deeply. She could hear the trees' rustling, the wind gently sweeping around them. She could hear the life of the forest. She could even hear the waves softly brushing against the shore. And she could hear his heart beat. Like a steady drum, thumping gently.

She leaned back slightly. Just so much that he wouldn't notice. Just so much that she could tell herself she didn't try to get closer to him. Everything around her disappeared, leaving only him and her. Enveloped in his robe, as one. The light touch of his body left her tingling, yearning for more contact. Her stomach felt like it was trying to pull in on itself. Her breathing sped up and she wanted to squirm. But she didn't dare to move.

He was just a friend. She wasn't supposed to feel this way.

Unable to bear it any longer and afraid that she might do something rash she stepped out of his embrace. She couldn't let him know what she had felt. She couldn't let herself know what she had felt. Without looking at him she turned away from the grounds.

The colours were harsh again, the wind loud and merciless. She hugged her arms around herself and headed back inside.

He was just a friend.
