Chapter 1: Secrets Unfold

"Frodo? Frodo?" Sam ran through the bushes looking for his friend. Frodo appeared from a high mount of grass.

"Oh I thought I lost you." Sam said relieved

"What are you talking about?" Frodo looked confused.

"It's just something Gandalf said." Sam explained.

"What did he say?"

"'Don't you lose him, Samwise Gamgee,"' he quoted. "And I don't meant to."

"Sam, we're still in the Shire, what could possibly happen?" Frodo asked. At that moment, they were both knocked down to the floor.

"Frodo!" Pippin cried. "Merry, look, its Frodo Baggins!"

"Hello Frodo!" Merry greeted enthusiastically.

"Get off of him!" Sam came back to life after noticing Merry's mischievous twinkle in those hazel eyes.

"What's the meaning of this?" Frodo asked shakily, noticing the pile of potatoes and other food items in Pippin's arms.

"You've been into Farmer Maggot's crops!" Sam demanded as they heard dogs barking and their owner shouting heatedly. Pippin dived into the bushes with a yelp, Merry pushed Frodo after him and followed.

Sam stared at the potatoes for a minute and then realised what he was doing and ran after his friends.

"I don't know what his deal is!" Pippin shouted as they jogged. "It's only a couple of carrots!" Merry chimed.

"And some mushrooms! And those potatoes from last week! And, and those white shrooms, the week before!"

"Yes, yes!" Merry hollered in an attempt to get Pippin running, he was in the lead. "My point is, he's clearly overreacting!"

Just then they came to an abrupt halt when Pippin saw they were at the top off a steep hill. Sam bumped into Frodo, who bumped into Merry and logically they all rolled down the hill, landing in a pile of hands and feet.

"I think I've broken something." Merry groaned. "Oh! I'm all good!" He said cheerfully as he realised it was the sound of carrots cracking, he had been sitting on them.

"Look! Mushrooms!" Pippin cried and everyone except Frodo hurried towards the growing shrooms.

Frodo's eyes widened as he saw a black cloaked figure riding on a black horse. The stranger had no face, just a hood, also black.

"U-uh...I think we should get off the road." he said as calmly as possible to his friends.

No one heard him.

A shrill, piercing cry echoed through the forest. Frodo froze, while his friends became silenced.

"Get off the road!" he screamed and they all huddled behind a tree as the figure came closer. Frodo felt a temptation to put on the Ring, but Sam stopped him. Merry and Pippin started throwing food at the black person and there was an ear piercing scream as he left.

"What was that?" Merry gasped. Frodo panted and heaved, but didn't reply.

Many hours later, they were still trying to find a way safe away from the black figure, it was still lurking. Sam had finally explained everything, Frodo was feeling very drained from the Ring's seductive and promising whispers. It told him to put it on and die peacefully. Frodo followed Gandalf's advice and ignored it.

Merry and Pippin decided to stick by their cousin at all times. "Buckleburry Ferry. Follow me."

Suddenly, they black figure appeared again. Frodo had to sprint to get to the raft, falling on top of Sam and knocking them both to the ground.

The figure shrieked with fury and the horse snorted and stomped its foot.

"How much?" Frodo asked.

"Brandywine River. 30 miles." Merry responded, grabbing an oar.

They reached Bree. It was raining. The gate opened and a man looked down at the four drenched hobbits.

"Hobbits! And in Bree! What business do you have here?"

"W-we want to know where the Prancing Pony is. Our business is our own." Frodo said bravely.

"Alright, young sir, I meant no harm, it's my duty to ask questions after sundown." said the gatekeeper and he let them in. The hobbits wasted no time, trying to find the named inn.

"There it is! I see it, I see it!" Pippin jumped up and down.

"We know you do!" Merry snapped.

"Shut up!" Frodo hissed, seeing some men watching them. Ignoring them he said, "lets go already.".
