Episode 1: thief through the night

This is after the awakening so it's like a new epoisede.


-a store-

There was a store in the middle of two homes it wasnt fancy but it had good alarm systems. That's why when the police arrived on the scene they were surprised that the thieves in question only took wires, some metal, other light items for building machines and 600 dollars from the cash register. The safe was completely intact.

"This is really unusual," said detective Elisa Maza while looking at the crime scene.

"Yeah. You'd think the thief would take the cash from the safe I mean they got past the alarms so easily. Disabling it by removing these two screws and then cutting the blue wire. Only someone pretty intelligent would know what to cut." The officer looked at the system and seemed to find the lock on the register was hacked.

"That and the fact that they only took the money from the register and a few items," said Elisa while walking around. "They never even touched the safe."

"But why that's the question." The officer looked for any fingerprints on the register. "They probably used gloves."

"Looks that way," said Elisa. She looked at the security camera. "And I'm not getting my hopes up for the cameras."

"Looks like this is the 10th place. Whoever's doing this is good." The officer sighed again looking out in the night sky from the window. "Well guess we'll just have to wait again. How about you go I'll finish up the scene."

"Okay," said Elisa before turning to leave.

As she walked away, Elisa was thinking that these robberies were getting out of hand. This had to stop as soon as possible. And she knew just the group to get on the job of finding these crooks.


-At the robbers place-

Several children came over to a man that was bald he had a gray beard piercing blue eyes and junky yellow teeth. His skin was a sickly tan and his clothes were as ragged as the kids one girl had blue eyes pale skin and purple hair that went up to her waist it was a bit matted and her hoodie was dirty as were her pants she brought the money and items to him but he looked fairly displeased he smacked her. Causing her to fall to the floor in pain she was the oldest of the children and so she took a lot of the assault if she didn't bring a certain amount.

"I thought I told you to bring me more than worthless trinkets. Why isn't there more?" The man looked angry almost like he wanted to kill her for her horrible job.

"Mari, are you okay?" a little girl with red hair asked rushing over to her. The girls name was Ruby but the man called her 10.

"Get away from her or you won't get supper either." The man got up from his chair.

Ruby squeaked and backed away from Mari. "Sorry."

The man sat back down glaring at her from afar. Marissa or what he called her 1 hated her treatment. But she wasn't gonna risk his anger for the other girls sakes. She walked away tomorrow she'd have to go out…..hopefully she could steal some food as well while she was out.


-Castle-

Elisa arrived at the castle just in time for the gargoyles to wake up. Once they were awake, she told them all about the .

"10 in one evening. 9 were caused completely number 10 only had a few things stolen. It was like they were avoiding stealing too much." Elisa showed them the picture she took to give them a better picture.

"Really?" Lexington asked he jumped down and looked at the picture. "What kinda thief does that?"

"That's the million dollar question." Elisa looked concerned with the stolen goods. If it continued the stores could go out of business.

"Don't worry, Elisa. We will find the thief and bring him to you," said Goliath he looked fairly angry.

Elisa hoped they would the city couldn't keep dealing with whoever it was stealing the items and money.


-Day time almost night time-

Marissa pulled up her hoodie walking across the streets when she came across a statue. A female statue of what looked like a gargoyle. She touched it she wished she was 18 already that way she could run away.

A few boys came along to throw stones at the statue.

"Move over," the boy demanded. "We're chucking rocks at that eye sore."

The girl looked at the 8 year old boys. "Are you stupid. I'm 15 you're 8. I can kick your ass. Now leave before I spank you." The boys growled before throwing rocks at her.

"Take this! And that!" One boy shouted while throwing rocks.

"You suck!" Another shouted while throwing rocks.

Marissa held out her arms trying to protect the statue the best she could. During this time, the sun had set and the statue started to crack. The boys stopped throwing as the stone broke away from the gargoyle and revealed a living female gargoyle with blue skin and red hair.

The gargoyle roared as she awakened. One boy threw a rock at her and she caught it in her hand with ease.

The female gargoyle glared at the boys. "Leave now, vermin!" and then spread her wings and roared.

The boys screamed before running off, one even wet his pants. That's when Marissa looked behind her. The gargoyle was glaring at her.

"You're not fleeing with them?" She asked.

"Uh well I wasn't the one throwing rocks." Marissa rubbed her neck.

The gargoyle looked at her closely and noticed her injuries. "It looks to me like they were assaulting you."

"I was blocking them from hitting you or at least the statue of you. No big deal I've received worse. But are you ok?" Marissa pulled back her hoodie her purple hair peeking out as she did.

"You protected me? Why?" The gargoyle asked, completely surprised.

"That's a pretty stupid question. Why wouldn't I...oh crap I'm gonna get in so much trouble if I don't do what he wants. Excuse me." Marissa ran off.

The gargoyle watched her as she left. This was completely new to her. Very few humans have ever shown her kind kindness. This was most curious. The gargoyle looked forward to seeing the girl again.


-the storage facility nighttime-

Marissa ran around looking for a store to steal from. She was sure the others probably have stolen from the stores already even with the high security upgrades it would be easy.

But then a thought came to mind there was a store nearby with a bunch of money no one would really miss a little money and food. She needed 2000 and the place had at least that much in items. But she wouldn't take more if it would leave the store bankrupt. And this storage place worked for a store.

She pulled on her hoodie her height may have made look a little older so the cops wouldn't know her actual age but that was the point of stuffing boots and wearing clothes like this to hide gender and age.

She quickly cut the wires of the alarm system like she learned and pushed open the storage container. She took some food items jewelry phones anything that would meet her 2000 dollar quota and made sure to deactivate feed and leave no fingerprints.

Honestly though even if she wasn't working for that man she would have still had to have stolen food to survive.

What she didn't know was that she was being watched. Some shadowy figures were hiding on the rooftop and for a while before spotting movement.

The shadowy figures watched as the figure below open the storage entered and bgan opening boxes. She took a few cellphones some money from another box and then she found some pain killers. She bit her lip and pushed the bottle in her pocket.

"That stuff doesn't belong to you," said a male voice in the shadows.

This spooked her so she ran. Driving around the corner. She gasped when she found herself face to face with a purple skinned male gargoyle with long black hair looking at her. His expression looked like one of disappointment. She was quickly grabbed by her throat as anger passed along with his disappointment. Her breath hitched.

"Do you realize how much trouble you've caused for the store owners and the police?"

She was gonna die she was small and had a fragile neck she could feel her throat closing. She started to cough violently as she tried to pry his hand off her neck she couldn't breath. The light was fading slightly before she became lax in his hands.

"Goliath! Stop! He's dying!" another voice shouted as more came rushing over.

Goliath immediately stopped squeezing and dropped Marissa. That was when her hood fell, revealing her face. Goliath gasped.

"She's just a kid," said Brooklyn while picking her up. The girls face was fairly young and her body light and small and in his moment of anger Goliath had almost killed her.

Her breath was small and deep as if trying to get as much air in her chest.

"We need to get her to a hospital," said Lexington, urgently.


-At the hospital-

The girl was cuffed to the bed Elisa wasn't taking any chances but somehow she doubted the charges would stick after her throat was almost shattered by Goliath.

The girl would probably claim police brutality and get a three month sentence if not having the case completely thrown out. Which was a little irritating.

She decided to walk back to the station to talk to the chief about the case and the items they found on her. "I might be able to at least get her a few months in juvie."


-The police station-

The chief looked at the case among everything else and sighed. "We might have to rethink the charges all together."

Elisa looked fairly angry at that thought. "Are you kidding me? Just because she has a few bruises doesn't mean we can drop the charges. Theft, breaking and entering, she should at least get a year minor or not."

"She has multiple broken bones, several bruises, and her arm has a small fracture according to the doctor. And as for the other stores there was theft performed while she was in the hospital." The chief folded his hands in a calm tone. "She's not the only one stealing."

Elisa took in the information and realized what that meant. "Someone's forcing her and probably one other, if not more, to do it. And abusing them if they don't."

"Most likely the person in question probably gives them a quota then if they don't fill it performs violent acts on the children or teens. This makes the charges quite different than if she was acting alone on her own terms."

"Was there any sexual assault." Elisa asked she looked nervous for the the answer.

"No they only found physical abuse. They found nothing from the rape kit."

"I can't believe someone would do this to an innocent kid," said Elisa, thinking about the hurt girl in the hospital. And then she thought of something. "Maybe she can help us."

"My thoughts exactly. Though after what happened I'm not sure she will be to willing to talk to the cops." The chief looked at the case before her. "As for charges we can probably get it dropped to forced theft and have her do community service but thats if she tells us because right now those kids all need help and she's our best lead."

"Let me try to talk to her," said Elisa.


-at the hospital-

The girl was being checked over her body. She had scars on her back and a number of newer injuries.

"Excuse me. Detective Maza. I'd like to speak with the girl that was brought in here earlier. The teenage Jane Doe," said Elisa from outside while showing her badge.

The nurse nodded. He walked over to his items and walked out to leave the girl and the detective alone.

"Hi," said Elisa with a friendly smile. "I'm Elisa Maza. What's your name?"

The girl in question merely glared at her. She was nearly killed by a being that had ten times the strength as her and this woman was still trying to get information out of her.

Elisa let out a sigh and said, "Look, I'm sorry about what happened to you. And I know now that you stealing isn't your fault. I wanna help you, but I need you to help me too. To save the others."

"Fuck you. After what your friend did to me there is zero reason for me to help you." The girl coldly glared at her after that.

"What about the other kids that this person is forcing to steal? Don't you wanna help them?" Elisa

"They'll survive. They won't if you or your-" she shut her mouth she almost said too much.

"We can offer you and them protection," Elisa pleaded. "Please, think of them."

"I am. That's why I'm not saying anything more." She explained in a cold tone. Elisa rubbed her eyes. This girl was definitely protective over the other kids.

There had to be a way to get through to her. The other children might end up like her. That bothered Elisa a lot. "I'll come to visit again later."

And then she left.


-The castle night time-

Elisa stood in the elevator with Owen she was going to talk to her friends and was hoping to get some advice. The gargoyles had just awakened when she arrived.

"Elisa," Goliath greeted as he and the others jumped down. "How is the girl? Will she be alright?"

"The lad's been quite ashamed of what he did," said Hudson patting Goliath his back.

"She's alright. But that's not the biggest issue. I've been trying to get the girl to talk to me but, get this, she had several fractures and fairly recent bruises in several different places along with scars."

"Scars?" Broadway asked in shock. "You mean someone's been abusing her?"

"Unfortunately, yes," said Elisa, looking upset. "And not just her."

This caught the gargoyles attention. "There's more?" Goliath asked.

"The chief thinks so," Elisa answered. "Another theft took place while she was in the hospital. Between that and the injuries, we suspect someone's forcing her and others to commit these crimes. And if they don't fill their quota, they're hurt."

"That's sick!" Brooklyn shouted.

"Sick yes but its working and she pretty much confirmed it by the way she said certain words. Unfortunately she's protective of the kids so she's not saying anything." Elisa sighed she rubbed her neck as she paced.

Goliath tried thinking of how to help. He got one idea. But it might be a longshot.

"Maybe we could find them," he said.

"Actually I was thinking maybe you can talk to her." Elisa said that took them by surprise. "I know I know. But maybe she might be willing to tell you."

"I don't know, Elisa. I did nearly kill her," Goliath said in doubt.

"Maybe it'll help if she hears an apology from you," said Brooklyn, trying to encourage his leader. "And look at it this way, the girls captor won't be expecting us to go after him or her."

Goliath let out a breath, "Alright. Let's go talk to the girl."

"Thanks, Goliath," said Elisa


-hospital-

The girl was sleeping in the dark area. She was dreaming of a being attacking her again the being grabbed her throat trying to choke the life out of her she jolted up in a cold sweat.

Elisa came in again. "Hi. Listen, I brought someone you should talk to."

The window opened and the gargoyles came in. Among them was the very gargoyle from her dream. The girl panicked even jolted back as far back into the bed. Fear formed in her eyes she needed to calm herself but her brain made her even more fearful.

Goliath saw her reaction and frowned sadly. And then he bowed and said, "I'm so sorry. My anger was out of control. But that was no excuse. I want to redeem my actions. Let me and my clan save your friends."

Marissa looked at him she saw her last boyfriend in this beings eyes. "Alright they normally gather in the sewers after a take. There's this old subway. It's number is 33."

"Thank you," said Goliath, smiling kindly.

"How many are there?" Hudson asked.

"He takes kids that are young normally age 7 or 9. There's 9 down there I'm number 1. That's what he calls me." Marissa sighed deeply.

"So what's your real name?" Broadway asked.

"Marissa. It's Latin for the sea." Marissa took a breath.

"That's a lovely name," said Goliath with a smile. Marissa turned red.

"About the others. Are there boys and girls?" Brooklyn asked.

"5 boy 5 girls. When one of us turns 18 he normally kicks us out. Or so I hear." Marissa looked away trying to think about something.

"Are you saying there have been others before you?" Brooklyn asked, concerned.

"I was the first one taken before the last group they were taken away in a van. I don't know where but I never saw them after that." Marissa told him in a calm tone. She was worried though.

"This can't be good," said Elisa. "Listen, Marissa, it's very important that you give me and the officers at the precinct all the information you have. This could be important."

"And don't worry about the other children. We will get them," said Goliath, growling a bit. "And bring that monster to justice."

"Thanks." Marissa fiddled with her fingers. She still was worried for her friends but hopefully they were ok.

The gargoyles climbed out the window and glided away to find the place Marissa told them. Elisa stayed behind and took out her tape recorder.

"My parents are dead. Probably why he took me if it helps. The other kids still have parents." Marissa explained the best she could she always hated talking about this she noticed the sympathy on Elisa's face. "Please don't give me that look."

"Sorry. It's just that it's sad to imagine a child with no family," Elisa said, looking away. "Even teenagers."

"Let's not forget I did steal from a store. May have been forced but I still did it." Marissa calmly told her.

"About that," Elisa began. "Given the circumstances, there's actually a chance we can get your punishment reduced. Maybe even just have you do community service."

"Really?" Marissa felt hopeful.

"Really," said Elisa. She turned on her recorder and held it. "Tell me everything that's happened to you and the other kids that man's taken. Even his name if you know it."


-sewers-

The gargoyles made their way underground just in time to see a little girl with red hair pass them. They themselves were hanging upside down with their claws.

"Guess we're on the right track," said Broadway.

"We should follow her," said Goliath. "She will lead us to the hideout. Just in case their location changed."

They crawled as quietly as they could following after the girl. She ran into a room with the money she had gathered from the store.

"Good job, number 10," a man's voice said in a cold gritty tone. "You'll get to eat tonight. Did you find number 1 while you were out?"

"No. Sorry," said the girl, a tremble in her voice.

"No matter I'll just call someone to take her away." The man nonchalantly said while taking a bite of bread.

"She could still come back," the girl said, shakingly.

"Oh shut up. She's useless and the moment she didn't come back was the moment she sealed her own fate." The man sent a message to someone through text.

The gargoyles growled angrily from their hiding place.

"But you don't even know where she is," a boy pointed out.

"He'll find her. He always does." The man laughed he pulled out a picture of the last group that were in a pile and shot through the head by a pale man with red hair.

The kids were now filled with fear. The gargoyles, on the other hand, were filled with fury. Goliath whispered for Brooklyn to go back to the hospital quickly, and he nodded and retreated.

"Honestly teens and kids have a way out the system takes it easy on them but adults, they're useless. I can't reuse them so when you turn 18 you'll be going away." The man smiled a wicked twisted smile.

The girl he called number 10 started crying at the idea.

"Shut up!" He got up from his seat and smacked her.

He suddenly felt himself grabbed from behind and thrown into the wall. When he sat up, he saw five monstrous creatures glaring at him and standing protectively in front of the children.

"Oh my God….beasts." He backed away slowly trying to think.

"You call us beasts?" Goliath growled as he approached him. "You are the true beast! You are a monster!"

The man tried to run. Fear running through his mind as he ran across the sewer grate to the surface. He was greeted by police cars and officers pointing guns right at his head.

"Freeze! Put your hands on your head and get on your knees!" a man with red hair shouted.

The man had no choice but to comply. An officer came behind him and cuffed him.

"You're under arrest for kidnapping and endangerment of minors," an officer said while pulling him up and forcing him into a cop car. "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If you can't afford one, one will be provided for you by the state."

A group of officers went down to the sewers and used the directions they got from Elisa. They found the hideout and the children were all there. Sadly, they also found the picture the man showed the kids. This meant that they had also failed. They made sure to add murder to the charges.


-Hospital same day-

Elisa was sitting with Marissa when she got a call on her phone.

"So how did it go?" Marissa asked.

"They got him. And the others are safe," Ekisa told her. And then she looked sad.

"Are you gonna look for their families?" Marissa asked trying to avoid the answer to the sad look.

"The officers are gonna get them examined at the hospital and then find them," Elisa told her.

"That's good." Marissa smiled happily.

"We'll do what we can to find you a home too," Elisa assured her.

"Why? I personally like the streets and, no offense, no one wants a 15 year old." Marissa sighed eating the food the nurse had given her.

"Sorry. But legally, I can't just ignore a girl on her own," said Elisa.

"Legally I can just run away from foster homes until I'm 18." She countered with a cocky smile.

"You're pretty stubborn, you know that?" Elisa asked, crossing her arms.

"I've been with an abusive jerk who killed my boyfriend. Of course I'm stubborn. And I have skills such as hacking…. I could be useful in more than just one way. By the way, is there a reason that gargoyle's been hiding out there since before your call?" Marissa gestured to the window.

"Huh?" Elisa asked. She opened the window and found what Marissa meant. "Brooklyn? What are you doing out here? I thought you went with Goliath and the others."

"Goliath sent me back to guard Marissa," Brooklyn explained while climbing inside. He gave her a serious look. "That monster ordered a hit on you?"

"By chance did he sent it through phone and does anyone have a laptop?" Marissa asked with a smile on her lips.

"He sent a text," said Brooklyn. "I think the man he contacted is coming to kill you."

"Yeah I got that but does anyone have a laptop?" Marissa asked again.

"I picked up mine earlier and didn't have time to take it home," said Elisa.

"Give it. I'll hack into the phones text by sending one when he opens it I'll track it and you'll have the exact location." Marissa smiled.

Elisa nodded and got her computer out. She then turned it on and gave it to Marissa.

She worked her magic hacking into the phone quickly and effectively and then showed a map and a dot moving. "Walla."

"Perfect," said Elisa. That was when he phone rang again. "Maza here. I know. Marissa figured it out. Listen, I think I know where he'll be. Yes. I'll stay with her. Bye."

"Gotta admit I'm good." Marissa smirked happily.

"You are," said Elisa before texting the location to an officer on her text list. "One of the kids, a girl named Ruby, told the officers about the hit and they're sending a few more cops over."

"Oh yeah I'm happy she's ok." Marissa smiled at that.

"Me too," said Brooklyn. "She was so scared. As I was leaving to protect you, I could swear I heard her crying."

"Well I was always protecting her." Marissa sighed.

"She and the others are on their way here now for their check ups. And then they're going home," said Elisa.

"Hay I'm curious is Goliath single." Marissa asked blushing slightly.

"Goliath?" Brooklyn asked, a little confused. "He had a mate, but it didn't work out. So yes."

"Hum cool."

"Well, I'm sure he and the others are on their way," said Brooklyn.

"Cool and I am almost 16 in like 2 months away just fyi." Marissa commented.

"Well, I guess, happy birthday in advance," said Brooklyn.

"Thanks I never got your name, did I?" Marissa rubbed her neck apolagticlay.

"I'm Brooklyn," he said. "The others can introduce themselves when they get here."

"Great. I can't wait to officially meet them." Marissa smiled at him. "Oh do you know a female gargoyle with red hair?"

Brooklyn and Elisa looked surprised. They looked at each other with curious looks.

"I'm taking that as a yes. Well I wanted to thank her for scaring off some kids who were throwing rocks."

"Uh…. Are you saying she helped you?" Brooklyn asked in confusion.

"Yeah in a way. Though she was a statue before and the boys throwing rocks were at her. In that moment so I got in front and tried to stop them and then in turn they throw it at me." Marissa explained with a fond smile.

"I'm just… a little…. Surprised," Brooklyn admitted. "The only female gargoyle I know is Demona. And she doesn't like humans."

"That's putting it mildly," Elisa bluntly said.

"Well she seemed pretty nice. At least to me. She reminded me of my mother."

"I'm just trying to figure out if this really is her," said Brooklyn. "Did she have gray blue skin? A gold tiara? Gold anklet?"

"Yep." Marissa confromed.

"Eyes glow red when angry?" Elisa asked.

"I didn't see her angry. Confused maybe." Marissa didn't get what the issue was.

"Sounds like Demona's description. Even if the eyes were unconfirmed," said Brooklyn. "But why we she be kind to a human, though."

"Whatever the reason I'm gonna get some sleep while I can stay here. So night." Marissa shrugged laying down to sleep.


-Next night-

Marissa waited until night time to get out of the hospital she used the sheets getting ready to climb out the window she tied it to the side of the bed and began climbing down.

She climbed until she finally reached the ground. Once she was safely on the ground, Marissa took off running. She was sure by now that the guy who was supposed to kill her was caught, so she was not at all worried about running into him out there. And knowing that the kids were going back home made her feel happy.

"Though 15 or not I'd love to date that Goliath he really is like Marko." Marissa smiled to herself. It was kinda odd to be attracted to someone who nearly killed you but she was.

As she wandered the streets, Marissa started to wonder what to do now. She ran away, but now she didn't know where she was going. Maybe she could sneak into an old abandoned building-

A man with blonde hair and glasses came up to her. "Are you miss Marissa?"

"Yes." Marissa looked confused by him and wondered what he was doing here.

"I will be taking care of you for awhile while my employer and your new adoptive father is in prison." The blonde man said.

"Oh really? Who is he?" Marissa asked skeptically.

"Mr. David Xanatos," said the man, showing her a picture.

That guy was rich, why would a rich man want a homeless kid. Actually how did he get the adoption approved….probably through money and connections.

"He heard about your situation and decided to help you," said the man.

"Ok so I just come with you then?" Marissa asked cautiously.

"Yes," said the man while opening a car door. "Goliath and the others should return home soon."

Marissa looked surprised. She got into the car reluctantly. Once the door was closed, the man got in himself and drove.


-Xanatos' home-

They stopped once they reached a tall building with a castle on top. When she got out, Marissa looked in awe at the structure.

"This is where you will live," said the man. "Oh, almost forgot. My name is Owen Burnett."

"Uh nice to formally meet you." Marissa politely said walking with him inside.

Owen got her past security and then into the elevator. He pressed a button and the doors closed to take them up. As they traveled upward, Marissa's thoughts wandered to to Goliath and his clan. Was Owen telling the truth? Were they really coming? Another question, was all this real? It seemed too good to be true.

The elevator stopped and once she came out she saw them and the detective.

"What is she doing here? The hospital reported her missing half an hour ago," Elisa asked rushing over to them.

"She's moving in," Owen answered. "Everyone, meet Mr. Xanatos' newly adopted daughter, Marissa Xanatos."

"Xanatos?" Lexington asked in shock. "Xanatos adopted you?"

"Apparently. I just found out. It's kinda odd. No offense." Marissa said to Owen.

"None taken. I'm aware it seems strange," said Owen. "Anyway, as the legal daughter of Mr. Xanatos, Marissa has full right to be here. Marissa, your room is on the next floor down three doors down I'm sure you can find it."

"Yeah I can excuse me." Marissa walked back into the elevator and went down.

Goliath walked up to Owen and asked in an accusatory tone, "What is Xanatos planning? I know he did not adopt her out of the kindness of his heart."

"I don't even know if he has one," Broadway added, crossing his arms.

"Mr. Xanatos is quite a generous man. I can see no reason why he wouldn't adopt a girl with such potential as her. She is quite lucky." Owen calmly said it was like he wasn't saying something.

"So he does have a plan that involves her?" Goliath asked.

"Hum for someone who had almost killed the girl, you seem quite interested." Owen responded in the same tone as before.

Goliath growled at that. "You have no idea how much I regret what I did."

"I'm sure you do. But as of now, she will be living here as Xanatos adopted daughter." Owen walked away Elisa looked at him with anger in her eyes.

"He better not be planning anything horrible for her," said Elisa.

"I think she's more like leverage like in those cop shows." Broadway said, thinking back to some of his favorite shows.

"Hmm. Makes sense," said Elisa. "Can I count on you guys to look out for her?"

"Of course, Elisa," said Goliath.

"And we still need to discuss you guys leaving the castle." Elisa added.

"Not this again," said Goliath, shaking his head. "This castle is our home. We are not abandoning it."

"Yes but if Xanatos has Marissa now he might use her to make you leave anyways you're not safe here and she's not safe with you here." Elisa.
