The place is made up. Inspired by stoked.
When my Mom told me I would be living with my father, Abe, for a year, I was bouncing up and down with excitement. It's not that my Mom wasn't great or anything or that I was a bad kid. It was just that I had no friends and no real attachments to this little town in Montana. Besides, Abe didn't really care what I did. The last time I visited was a month in the Summer and the longest he was there was four days. My brother Eddie on the other hand was the definition of popular and I was just the weird sister. Eddie begged Mom if he could stay with her for the school year but she insisted that he must try school out before he came back. However I'm pretty sure Mom already knew I might never want to come back after spending time there.
"There" was on Sunset Island in Canada. It was a tourist-trap town with a tacky resort that put Sunset Island's name on the map. "School" there was in the town's library because of the population of the students and the lack of staff. Abe owned a nice sized beach house a mile from the bay.
As our car pulled into the driveway from our silent ride to Abe's house, I just smiled at the sights. However, Eddie had put on a permanent scowl since we boarded the plane. Abe was good, he didn't push any sort of subject and no one really wanted to try. We might be family but often times we didn't have anything in common that we knew about. I didn't want to appear anxious for Eddie's sake so I waited until Abe opened his car door to jump out of mine.
Although our parents were rich and good at their jobs, Eddie and I never really asked for anything so we didn't bring too much. I only had a box and a couple bags. Eddie had two boxes mostly containing video games. Abe left us to unpack while he ordered Chinese take out for dinner.
The walls of my room were a soft purple with a large window, a dresser, and a bed. Plus a walk in closet and my own bathroom. It was really all I needed. I put away my clothes and put all my electronics inside a drawer in the dresser. I was just that simple. When I walked to Eddie's room he was hooking up his gaming system with all his clothes dumped in a pile on his bed.
At that moment the doorbell rang and I knew it was the delivery man. Eddie and I met Abe downstairs. While we ate Abe decided to make an important announcement.
"As you probably already assumed, I won't be here as usual, I will be dropping by every-so-often. There are emergency contacts on the fridge. I'm giving you debit cards but I will be watching your accounts. I trust you to be safe. You're 16 and 17. I am leaving tomorrow morning, I'm sorry guys. I know that it's a lot to absorb but that's my business for you." Abe informed.
I just told him I was okay with everything and I wouldn't mess up. Plus, I wasn't the one who was 17. However, Eddie just asked, "What do you do for work anyways?"
Abe didn't answer. It was dismissal for us to keep quiet and just take what Abe gives us. After dinner, I went to sleep listening to the ocean and tasting the salty air.
