What I See

(JPOV)

I clambered out of bed and got dressed. Don't get the wrong idea. I could never sleep. No matter how hard I tried. After buttoning up my shirt I turned around to inspect myself in the full mirror next to my desk. A flood of memories came rushing back to me. Memories of my life without Alice.

This white shirt was the one I has worn the day I killed a young girl. She was only thirteen. Her hair was brown and cascaded down her back in waves. She smelled so good. Like violets. She was walking down the sidewalk, probably to her house. I approached her and chatted with her a bit as we walked. Her name was Elizabeth Cunningham. She loved animals and wanted to be a vet someday.

She never got to be a vet.

After a while I took her down an alley. It was dark and damp, no place for her. But I led her on anyway. I smiled, and leaned down, as if to kiss her. Instead I glided my lips across her neck, and bit her, sealing her fate, and sucking her blood.

I ripped the shirt off my chest. I hated those days. I had no self control. I was weak. I shook my head at the figure in the mirror with pure hatred. He was a monster. I was a monster.

Suddenly, a pair of thin, pale arms wound around my bare torso from behind. It was Alice. My Alice.

"Stop angsting Jasper. You didn't mean to kill Elizabeth."

I was silent.

She continued. "Would you like to know what I see?"

I shrugged, unwilling to speak.

"I see the strongest person I've ever known." And with that she turned me around and stood on her toes so she could kiss me.

Oh Alice. My Alice.

End
