A/N: I don't own anything neither CM, nor the characters.
For Julieta: Actually there wasn't more - until you asked for. Hope, you like it.
What we are capable of
"We judge ourselves by what we feel capable of doing, while others judge us by what we have already done." (Henry Wadsworth Longfellow)
She had died, had gone away, had passed by... There were many expressions, when someone died, but there was none for the loss of Emily Prentiss, which sounded right for David Rossi. Prentiss' death was awfully wrong.
When he had joined the team some years ago, Rossi had never expected that these people would become so important to him. Of course, he spent the most time of the days with them and he knew them well, but it was more then this.
The team's relationship was built on trust and loyalty. Everyone had come from a different background, but what they all had in common was the belief in their work and their strength to go on after every case. Sometimes outsiders compared them to a family. Maybe this hit the point.
He was not able to cry about the loss or to curse in silence like the others might do. There was a deep grief inside him, and he felt anger about the unfairness of life. During his work life Rossi had seen terrible things, met people, he never wanted to speak to or even see for a second time. He knew life wasn't bright and fine all around. Some people ever did terrible things to others.
Rossi somehow understood, why Prentiss had decided not including her colleagues, while figuring out the thing with Ian Doyle, but he was not able to forgive her to abandon her friends without any notice or caution. This was irrational thinking, but he could not avoid it.
Today was the day of her funeral.
They would survive somehow, would learn to cope with the loss of their colleague and dearly loved friend. They would go on, because there were things to do. Their souls would need some time to heal, but one day they would think of Prentiss and just see the good memories: her power, her humor and her smile.
One day they would be capable to handle their bereavement. One day, but not today.
„Loss and possession, Death and life are one. There falls no shadow where there shines no sun." (Hiaire Belloc)
