It was unusually warm out, as my partner and I were about to execute our mission in Nimbasa city. The sky was the color of tar, and storm clouds covered any visible moonlight. The viscous air hung over my head, smothering my thoughts. In the haze of heat, I stared blankly out at the darkened city through the alley way were in. The street light illuminated our area, casting our shadows through the night.
Sticking my hands in my trench coat pockets, I let out a sigh. Neither one of us talked. The only noise was the occasional thunder. It was almost always like that anymore. We hardly talked like we used to. Our conversations mostly consisted of the details of our mission plans. Other than that, it was silent, especially since Meowth started traveling with the twerps. It was like we were no longer connected like we used to be. Everything revolved around our undercover work.
I turned my head and glanced at her. My Jessie… Her face was stern, crumpled into a frown, out lined by her signature cherry red lipstick. Her long magenta locks were tucked away in her hat. Noticing my eyes on her, she looked up from her watch that she was setting on her thin wrist. Her leafy green earrings shined when she turned her head and pierced me with her deep, ocean blue eyes. I couldn't look away. It was the first time we made eye contact all day.
All of a sudden, rain poured around us, accumulating on the rim of our hats. Our eyes were still locked. As quickly as the down pour came, I felt hot tears trail down my cheeks. I moved my hand to my emerald eyes in a vain attempt to hide and wipe them away. She grabbed my hand just looked at me, confused from the sudden outburst of emotion. I wrapped my arms around her and pulled her closer. For the first time in months, we shared a hug. I felt a pang in my heart as if it were about to shatter into shards. It was like back in Sinnoh before everything became so monochrome, so black and white.
"James, are you ok?" She asked, surprised by our embrace. I felt her gloved hands stroke my now wet lavender hair and back, comfortingly.
I pulled away, looking at her beautiful sapphire eyes. "Do you… Do you think Meowth is doing alright?" I managed, not wanting to tell her the full reason behind my tears.
She put one gloved hand on my cheek and attempted to wipe my eyes. "James, listen to me. That was then, and this is now. I'm sure he's alright. We have to focus on tonight. We have to move."
She pulled away and motioned to walk with her. Reluctantly, I picked up my feet. "Yes, ma'am."
Authors Note: Story time! So I had this idea a little while ago as I was rewatching some Pokémon episodes. I came across the series of episodes where Meowth was with Ash, Iris and Cilan. There was a quote in the one episode with the Purrloin where James was worried about Meowth and Jessie just dismisses him, telling him to focus on the mission. I like to think that they both put up a serious front in the Black and White series and that they were so focused on succeeding that they neglected their relationship, causing sadness in them. Also this was inspired by the song Jet Pack Blues by Fall Out Boy. And since they wore trench coats and rode on jet packs I thought it was perfect. I hope you guys liked it!
