They patrolled together in silence, but in their heads, many thoughts were swirling about.
James thought about Lily. He remembered the first time he saw her, when he had almost fallen over because she was so beautiful. He thought about that magical sixth year when they had become friends. James vividly remembered the first time he got a genuine smile from Lily. He remembered the way she gave him a hug before he left for Christmas break and an even bigger hug when he came back. They were friends. When they reached seventh year and Lily and James were made Head Boy and Head Girl, they were both very happy.
Lily and James. That sounded so perfect to him. Those names belonged together. Of that, James was sure.
Lily thought about James. In the last few months, James had become her friend. She thoroughly enjoyed his company, and Lily simply could not imagine her life without James somewhere in it. He made her laugh, and he seemed to brighten up every moment with his enthusiasm.
She thought of the way he was committed to his friends, and how he would never hurt anyone, except for that fly that he had spent two hours chasing down because it had been annoying her in the Head's common room. Over the course of that magical sixth year, Lily had come to a conclusion: James made her happy, and she wanted to be with him.
That is why she was going to ask him out. On a date. Any minute now.
They walked in a comfortable silence. They were both thinking. James glanced over at Lily. She looked so pretty, but in a simple, happy way that made him smile. He wanted to reach over and give her a big hug and tell her that he loved her, but he refrained from doing so. James was afraid of upsetting her and hurting their relationship.
Lily took a deep breath and glanced at James. He looked so at ease and comfortable, but she knew this was the perfect time to ask. Lily smiled to herself.
"James?"
"Yes, Lily?"
"Would you like to go out on a date sometime?"
James continued walking, his face perfectly still. But inside, his body went into overdrive. He had never been more excited to answer a question before. As they passed an entrance to a broom closet, he stopped.
"Please excuse me for a moment, Lily, I will be right back."
James quickly opened the door of the broom closet and walked in, closing the door behind him. He stood there for a moment, dazed.
"YES! YES! YES! OH MERLIN, YES! FINALLY! THANK YOU GOD!"
Lily stifled a giggle as the broom closet fell silent. James opened the door and stepped out, looking perfectly placid.
"Why yes Lily, a date with you sounds simply perfect."
She smiled. He smiled back.
