Ron lay flat on his back staring up at the sky

A Luce TF2 fic not of the romance genre! Wow! Just read it and review it… flames are appreciated always.

The Tracks of my Tears

Ron lay flat on his back staring up at the sky. He couldn't sleep so he had wandered the house aimlessly for a while then wandered outside into the balmy summer night. The grass was damp and cool on his back but he barely noticed as he lost himself in the inky black night. The stars twinkled mischievously at him and Ron was perplexed staring at the sky as though it had all the answers. No one seemed to be able to supply them any more. His thoughts flowed and he listlessly let the minutes tick by. He was soon aware of the back door opening and closing. He watched as his younger sister Ginny stood over him.

"Hi Ron," she said sheepishly.

"Hello Gin." He replied knowing what was coming. Ginny was fraught with nerves over all the recent goings on. She was having more trouble sleeping than he was and her eyes looked so vulnerable like a lost child's. He smiled weakly at her.

"Come on out with it," he said and Ginny sighed and sat cross-legged beside him. There was silence as both of them gazed out into the stars. Ron looked over at his sister. She was biting her lip and looking worried as ever. She looked the way he felt inside, which was scared, worried and wanting more than anything someone to comfort them and reassure them about what was coming. She spoke suddenly.

"Ron…" she started then stopped just as quickly.

"What?"

"I…I…Oh I don't know Ron. That's half the trouble. No one knows anymore. No one." Taking a shaky breath Ginny looked at him with glassy eyes. "What if it was you Ron? What if it was you who'd got in the way of You-Know-Who? Bad enough that it could have been Harry but my brother… I couldn't stand it. It's one thing to lose a friend, another thing completely to lose my big brother… and what if … what if something happens to you Ron? I couldn't bear it." Her voice cracked and tears began to stream down her face. Ron sat up and pulled her into a hug.

"Ginny, I promise you nothing is going to happen to me or to Harry for that matter." He wished he could really be sure of that.

"Look I'm here now, Harry will be here soon and as long as Dumbledore has an eye on the situation we will all be OK. I promise." He listened to himself and closed his eyes. He wished he could believe his own words. Ginny's sobs slowly subsided and she rested her head on Ron's shoulder. Ron spoke gently to her.

" I can understand Ginny. You have no idea what it was like for me when I heard you'd been taken into the Chamber of Secrets… sitting there waiting for my best friend to emerge through a pile or rubble with or without you and not knowing if you were alive or dead…always hoping but fearing the worst. I don't know what I would have done if he hadn't… if you hadn't…" he stopped and hugged her tighter.

They sat there under the black sky and Ron felt closer to his sister than he ever had before. For once he had got to be the comforting older brother and it felt good. But what if something did happen? To Ginny or Harry or Hermione… he wanted to run… break away from it all but he couldn't. He felt a lump in his throat and he realised just how lucky he was. The power of the Dark Side was rising and Ron could feel it crawling up all around them. And as he and Ginny sat there he remembered words that gave him some comfort.

"We are as strong as we are united and as weak as we are divided," he said out loud. Ginny exhaled.

"Wise words from your big brother," he commented and squeezed her tight before letting go and standing up.

"Come on," he said offering her a hand to help her up. "Inside."
