Time to say goodbye
They stood beside each other at the airport waiting
for the plane to Salt Lake City.
Mulder looked down at his partner for seven years
and thought about how she had changed since that
first day she had come through the basement door as
a young fresh agent.
Then she hadn't known anything about little green
men and government conspiracy.
He had seen how she grew harder and bitterer
through her abduction, her sisters death, her
cancer, Emily and her inability to bear children.
He had seen her become him. Bitter of life, alone
with no friends, trusting nobody and giving up
everything just to learn about the truth.
But they had always had each other to relay on and
trust, but now they had taken that away from them
too.
Scully had been reassigned, for a second time, to
Salt Lake City, and this time she was leaving.
Leaving him and they X-Files behind.
"Flight 2802 is now boarding at gate 12."
She looked up at him with sorrow in her eyes.
"Scully, he started, I..."
She interrupted him.
"Don't, don't say anything Mulder. I think it will
be for the best this way. When I'm there they can't
use me against you and the X-Files."
"But..."
"Don't, Mulder." she said again and gave him a look
that kept him quiet as they walked to the gate.
When the reached the gate she turned to him.
"So this is it." he asked her with a silent plea in
his eyes. She looked away and said:
"Yes it is and you'll be fine without me Mulder."
She wouldn't look at him.
'No I won't be fine without you Scully.' his inner
voice said but he didn't say it out loud.
She gave him a chaste kiss on his cheek.
"Bye, Mulder." His whole world broke with two
simple words like these.
She turned and went to the desk to give the lady
her boarding pass but halfway there she stopped and
turned back to him. She almost ran to him and gave
him a tight hug burying her head in his shoulder.
The time stopped and he never wanted to let go but
the woman at the desk cleared her throat and Scully
broke the hug.
She looked at him with tears in her eyes.
"I'm gonna miss you."
And before he knew it she was gone.
Mulder went to the window and looked when the plane
went off in the air taking Scully and his heart
with it.
"I'm gonna miss you too Scully" he whispered to the
empty airport.
He turned away from the window and started going
back to his car and lonely apartment.
After a few steps he heard someone going after him
but he didn't care.
"Mulder..."
He stopped dead in his tracks not believing what he
just heard, didn't dare to believe it.
But he had to look and when he turned around he saw
her. The sight of her more beautiful then ever, her
blue eyes still filled with tears looking at him
whispering his name once more.
His eyes met hers and they just looked at each
other.
"I couldn't leave you Mulder." she said finally.
"Why?" Was all he managed to get out, his eyes
never leaving hers.
"Because I love you." She said letting all her
emotions shine through her eyes.
For a moment he just stood there not believing his
ears but then he started to smile, a big happy
smile. He closed the distant between them with a
few steps. And just before his mouth came down to
hers he said:
"And I love you."
