Forest

It's early spring, and as I walk through the forest, the brisk wind bites at my face. Overhead, gray storm clouds obscure the sun, leaving only the meanest rays to illuminate the path, and all is silent save a crow cawing in the distance and the crunch of pine needles under my feet.

Turning a bend, I feel a jabbing pain in my foot, and find a rock lodged in my shoe. When I look up, I see a charming clearing. Soft, long grasses bend gracefully in the wind, the palest shade of green. On the other side a derelict fence stands, broken in some parts with its once white paint chipped and dirty.

I take a deep breath and relax in the peace and stillness of this pastoral idyll. Then, in the corner of my eye, I spot a field mouse crouched down and nibbling at some unknown object clutched between its paws. Muscles ripple under gleaming brown fur and delicate paper-thin ears swivel around, always listening for danger.

All of a sudden, a kestrel swoops into the air above the meadow, and the air is cut by the elegant curves of its flight. Hovering for a moment, it beats its wings and scans the grass with sharp eyes. Suddenly, it dives into the clearing and emerges victorious, with the mouse hangs limp from its talons. I smile with appreciation of the beautiful moment. Then as quickly as it came, the kestrel soars away and soon it becomes indistinguishable from the sky.

I want to be like that bird, and just fly away. I'd like to see the world stretch in front of me in a vivid expanse and be pushed by the thermals ever higher. I'd like to skim the clouds with the tips of my wings and feel the moisture of the young rain.

I know it's impossible.

But I still wish.
