Fireworks.

OneShot.

The sound of gunshots exploded through the air, piercing through Matt's ears with vibrations. But they were not bullets blasting through the barrel of a gun. Oh no, they were something much more pleasant.

"Do you want to watch them outside Mello?" Matt asked, not looking up from the game he was playing fiercely on his DS.

"The window's fine." Mello responded, not moving from his spot near the window. He was highlighted by the many flashes of blues, greens, reds and whites that burst through the sky with each bang.

"You sure?" Matt checked again. To be honest, he wouldn't have minded going outside to watch the fireworks. The Fourth of July only came once a year, after all. But then again there was always New Years.

Mello ignored him, as expected. Silence except for the constant blipping of the game in his hands. Matt's eyes did a double take on Mello who was staring out into the sky with the most forlorn expression Matt thought he'd ever seen. The game was put down momentarily and his lazy bum was lifted off the seat. Quietly, he tiptoed over to the blonde, wrapping his arms around him.

"Why do you look so lost, little puppy?" Matt whispered close into Mello's ear, feeling the other hold back a shiver from the contact. A cool tongue was lightly feathered up Mello's neck.

"I'm the puppy?" Mello grunted. "Hardly. You're the one licking your Master as we speak."

Matt leaned his chin on the masculine shoulder in front of him, staring out at the fireworks in the distance.

"Alright fine, I'm the puppy." He shrugged against the older man. "As you wish, Master."

Mello rolled his eyes, causing the read-head behind him to smirk with satisfaction.

"What if this is the last Fourth of July we ever see, Matt?" It was whispered and definitely not intended for Matt to actually hear, but it was said nonetheless. He pulled back, giving the other a strange look.

"What's gotten into you? Where's your chocolate?" Matt narrowed his eyes. "Have you…been talking to Hal..?"

Mello massaged his tear buds, gritting his teeth.

"No Matt. I haven't spoken with Hal since we left Japan. You know that. I've just been thinking about how close things came back there. What if the cops hadn't let you speak? What if they had just shot you out of cold blood? What if I never got rid of that bitch Takada and bailed you out? What if Near had never caught Kira?"

"What if, what if, what if." Matt waved his hand dismissively. "Who cares, Mello? The point is, none of that did happen. We're back in the US, Kira is gone, and we have the rest of our lives to spend together. If you don't all of a sudden decide that you're going to leave again."

"You know I'll come back. I always come back."

Matt smiled. "I know Mello. I know."

The blonde quickly dusted his lips against the other's.

"Good dog."

Really short. Dun really like it. I just had to write some MattMello. Badly.
