To each other
To her, he was a fresh breath of something she lacked in her life: Honesty.
For a girl like Elena, who everybody lie to, tell her half truths and justify it all by the all famous we were protecting you rule, he was certainly a novelty.
Elena, the former golden girl of Mystic falls was taken for a fool by every single person she had ever known: her parents (real and foster), her friends (occasionally), Damon (as though compelling her into forgetting got the tight knit any looser), even Stefan (with the whole I no longer feel thing).
Wow, long list.
When he entered her life, he was a bit vague, yet a while after, he told her everything blatantly no twists, no lies, nothing at all.
He told her she might die to her face.
He was a straight line, a linearly shot arrow, an obvious target, a one simple truth, he doesn't manipulate or do mind games (unlike his master manipulator of a brother) .
That is why she couldn't bring herself to hate him, even after she was turned.
That is why she respects him when he tells her he needs to stay away from her, that is why she respects him even more when he tells her it maybe the last time she'd see him (despite he knows how much it hurts her to see him leave).
He knows that she needn't more complexities in her existence, so he does the right thing, even if it hurts her.
That is why he will always hold a place, so special in her heart, because Elijah is honest.
To him, she was a dream he could never attain just like her predecessors.
Yet her compassion was what drew him closer and closer.
She was the compassion he yearned for.
The compassion he wanted to see so long since he started carrying the burden of their shadow of a family, the compassion that could get under the cool, composed façade of his and assess how vulnerable he truly was, how cracked up.
He knows he can never be fair to her, he knows that he can never do to her what the Salvatores did because he feels as though he owes her much, he owes her the terror she felt while she was under Rebekah's watch, her vampirism and a lot of traumas that headed her way, that is why he is going away, yet again, he is leaving so he won't hurt her more, he is leaving cause every time an original approaches a petrova fire bursts and she already had her fair share of burns since he approached.
Maybe in their immortal existence, they might meet again.
Maybe when her life becomes less complicated, she'd bounce back to him.
Maybe when his curuse is broken, they might both be happy.
