11:00 AM
Mike "Thatcher" Baker and Jordan "Thermite" Trace were both sitting in the Rec room watching Line of Duty on Netflix.
"I reckon I could solve this shit in about 10 minutes. These slow fookers are really grinding my gears."
Jordan chuckled at this. "C'mon Mike, give 'em a bit of credit. They're not as old as you are."
"Old." Mike scoffed. "I prefer the term 'experienced.'".
"Whatever you say old man."
"Attention all Operators. Please proceed to the meeting room, where we have a special guest joining us." Six's voice came through the speakers.
Mike grabbed the remote, paused the TV, and looked at Jordan in confusion. "It can't be a new operator already, can it?"
"Six keeps a lot of things secret, so I wouldn't be surprised." They both got up and made their way to the meeting room, where on the way they ran into the two newest Operators, Tori "Gridlock" Tallyo Fairfield and Max "Mozzie" Goose.
"G'day fellas. I wonder what this is all about." Max nodded to his teammates.
"'No fookin clue, mate. Just have to wait and see." Mike replied, as they took their seats in the meeting room.
Six walked into the room, accompanied by someone in yellow and grey armour. The chattering died down, as Six cleared her throat. "Thank you all for coming here on such short notice. Now, as you know, our newest operators, Gridlock and Mozzie, came onboard Team Rainbow about a month ago, on the 6th March, however they didn't officially move in until 13th March. Even though it's only been a few weeks since these two have joined, I've known this man for most of my career, so I would like to introduce the newest member of Team Rainbow, who will be moving in with immediate effect. Wash, would you like to join me on stage?"
Wash stood onto the stage and removed his helmet, to reveal the face of a twenty-something year old guy, with blonde hair. "Hello everybody. My name is Agent Washington, but my friends call me David, which is my real name, or just Wash. I was once a member of a secret organisation called Project Freelancer, which was run by a man only known as The Director. Until the last mission where everything went horribly wrong."
"What happened?" Jordan asked.
Wash sighed. "We were sent to uncover secrets of a joint operation between The Insurrectionists, and a terrorist group known as The White Masks..."
Flashback
"Come on, Wash! Florida and North are already down, we need to move! Now!" Carolina grabbed Wash's hand and pulled him up from off the ground. Fires burnt around them as they made their way out of the control room and into an adjacent corridor.
"Who's down and who's still with me?" Carolina asked on comms.
"Tex and I are stuck in a firefight with some White Mask bastards. I don't think- AARGH Fuck!"
"South!"
"I'm hit. I dunno if I'm gonna make it, the bleedings pretty bad."
"Don't you dare die on me, South. That's an order." Tex told her.
South chuckled weakly. "You can't give me orders, dumbass..." And with a final breath, South stopped moving. Tex unholstered her Magnum pistol and rested it on South's body. "I will make sure you are avenged." She muttered, then activated her comms. "Agent South Dakota is down. I repeat, South is KIA."
"Roger. We're on our way to you now, over."
"Make it quick, I'm kinda pinned down over here. Tex out."
"Is there a happy ending?" One of the female operators asked. Wash shook his head. "I'm afraid not."
"Carolina, Wash. Prepare to kick some ass one last time."
"You got it, Tex. Well Carolina, looks like this is the end of the line."
'It's been fun, Wash. Oh, and Tex? I'm sorry for everything. It's not your fault, you just arrived so sudden."
"It's alright Carolina. I'm sorry for being a complete asshole."
"The next twenty minutes were a blur of bullets and shouting. All was going well, until he showed up."
"Are we clear?" Carolina asked, as she lowered her BR55.
"I think so." Tex replied, as she did the same. "Although, my gut is telling me something's off." As she said this, a faint hiss was heard through the corridor. It got louder and louder, as a bomber ran behind the trio.
"Carolina! Look out!" Wash cried. Carolina turned around to see a bomber charging towards her. She clenched up and closed her eyes, waiting for the blast to kill her. Instead, it never came. She opened her eyes, and to her surprise, was unharmed. Instead, she turned to see Wash kneeling by Tex's body in a pool of blood.
"Wash." She said quietly. "Is she...?"
"Dead." He confirmed. "She sacrificed her life to save yours. A true act, and the final act, of a soldier of Project Freelancer. Everyone's dead. Let's go home." To his surprise, Carolina grabbed Wash's hand
"Wash?"
"Yes, Carolina?"
"Don't ever leave me."
"Wasn't planning on it." Wash chuckled as they walked out of the wrecked building, hand-in-hand.
"And that's exactly when she left me." Wash concluded. "She got discharged for PTSD. A week later, news broke out that she and her father had been killed in a car crash. Needless to say, I was devastated. I've lost so much; I just hope I can fit in with all of you."
Seamus "Sledge" Cowden went over to Wash and patted him on the back. "Don't worry lad. You've got a new family. Rest assured, whatever happened previously, won't happen here." He motioned to the rest of the operators, who either smiled or waved.
"Thank you, Seamus." Six said. "Wash, have a seat and I'll explain what happens now." Wash nodded and looked around for a spare seat. One of the operators raised their hand and waved, motioning to the empty chair next to her. Wash came over, smiled and sat down. "'Hi!" She whispered. "I'm Dokkaebi, but my real name's Grace."
"Nice to meet you." Wash whispered back.
"Now then, we'll use codenames from now on. The White Masks have taken a family hostage in their own house. We have been studying the area for quite a while, and have decided now is the opportunity to strike." Six told them.
"Do we know the location?" Thatcher asked.
"Los Angeles, California." Six replied. "I'm sending a team of six. Thermite, Thatcher, Dokkaebi, IQ, Ying, and Wash will make up the last man. Thatcher will be in charge of this op. Am I clear?"
A chorus of "Yes Ma'am!" rang through the room. "Good. Prep to deploy in 10. Dokkaebi, you're in charge of Wash. Dismissed!" All operators saluted and left the room, apart from Dokkaebi and Wash.
"C'mon Wash, lets join the others in the armoury." Dokkaebi grabbed Wash's hand and practically dragged him all the way down to the armoury, where the rest of the team were waiting.
"Ah! I was wondering when you two would get yer arses down here. Grab a weapon from Craig and prep to move." Thatcher somewhat commanded.
"Go easy on the lad, Mike. It's his first mission with us for cryin out loud." Craig commented.
"It's alright. I've had plenty of experience following orders. Now, I believe I'm here for weapons, and not arguments between operators?" Wash questioned. There was silence, until Craig laughed and patted Wash on the back.
"Don't worry Wash, you'll fit right in." Craig said. "Now then, weapons." He picked up a rifle, then a pistol and tossed them to Dokkaebi. "Grace, here's your customised MK14 EBR, with your C75 Auto Machine pistol."
"Did you get me some stun grenades?" She asked excitedly, after she had holstered her pistol.
Craig smiled. "I did indeed." He said as he tossed three towards her. "Now, Wash. You're a completely different story because I have no idea what you like to use."
"I'll use whatever Thatcher recommends, since he's the leader of this op." Wash suggested.
"Ah." Craig nodded. "You'll want the L85A2 then. Solid assault rifle with good overall damage."
"Sounds like a plan." Wash. "What attachments have we got?"
Craig took some boxes and put them on top of the counter. "For sights, we have: Red Dot, Holographic, Reflex or ACOG. For the barrel attachment, you have a choice of: Suppressor, Flash Hider, Compensator or Muzzle Brake. You have a Vertical Grip option, as well as a under barrel Laser Sight."
Wash thought before answering. "'I'll run with the ACOG, Compensator and the Vertical Grip please Craig."
"Sure thing. One customised L85A2 coming right up." Five minutes later, Craig handed the newly customised L85A2 over to Wash. "Here you go, just try not to lose it."
"I won't." Wash chuckled. He turned to Thatcher, who held up an ear piece.
"It's so we can communicate during the mission." Thatcher explained.
"No need. What's the frequency on them?" Wash asked.
"'Set it to Two Zero Mike Lima, why?" Thatcher asked, as he watched Wash do something inside his helmet.
"Two Zero Mike Lima." He muttered to himself, before putting his helmet on, satisfied with what he had done. "Internally wired radio. I can now talk to any of you on comms through my helmet."
"Neat trick." Dokkaebi commented.
"Yep." Wash sounded smug.
"Alright, quit screwing around. Choppers ready to go. I'll brief you all on the way." Thatcher told them.
LA

04:00 AM – 9 hours later
The helicopter carrying the six Team Rainbow members landed on the side street near the house. The garage was surrounded by police cars, with fires sitting on the top of most of them. Team Rainbow exited the helicopter, weapons in hand.
"Cheers for the lift, Seamus. I'll radio back when we're done." Thatcher said over comms.
"Rodger, I'll be in the area standing by. Good luck lads. Sledge out." Seamus replied.
Thatcher put a hand over his head, signalling "on me" to the rest of the operators, who crowded around him. "Right, you all know your objectives. Wash, Thermite, you'll go through Construction Sight and rappel up to the top floor. Dokkaebi, Ying, you two will stay here and guard the extraction point. No one gets near here. IQ, you're with me. We'll breach through the garage and make our way up. Take out as many enemies as you can, don't bunch up and for fooks sake don't get yourselves killed."
Wash loaded a mag and cocked his weapon. "Wasn't planning on it, Sir."
"Don't call me Sir, Wash. I work for a living. Now, let's move!" Thatcher ordered. The team quickly dispersed into their designated groups.
"Come on, Wash. You're with me." Thermite took off, with Wash walking behind him. Once they arrived at the Construction Sight, Thermite handed Wash a rappel. "Whatever you do, don't fall down and injure yourself, otherwise Doc's gonna kill you. Just follow my lead, and you'll be fine."
"Thermite, we're about to breach. Are you in position?" Thatcher's voice spoke through comms.
"Yep, just need to rappel up then we'll cover you. Come on Wash." Thermite replied.
Thermite and Wash rappelled up to the outside of the second-floor window.
"Thatcher we're here. On my countdown, set off the breach charge and I'll break the window."
"Rodger. IQ, get ready."
"You got it, Thatcher."
"Three... Two... One... Breach!" Thermite broke the window and a part of the board covering the second-floor. At the same time, a loud explosion was heard where Wash could only assume was the garage.
Meanwhile, sitting at extraction, were two lonely and bored shitless operators.
"Why did Thatcher leave us to guard the goddamn extraction point? It's a waste of talent." Dokkaebi complained.
"We may never know, Grace. But don't forget, even the smallest jobs make a difference." Ying replied.
"Get outta here with your cryptic bullshit, Sui." Dokkaebi told her, to which Ying merely smiled. "Speaking of cryptic, what do you make of the new guy?"
"I don't have enough info to come to a logical conclusion at the moment, Grace."
"A simple 'I dunno' would have worked then." Dokkaebi said, and they both lauhged at that.
"None of us have seen him in action, yet. But he did open up about his past, albeit vaguely. What if he's hiding something darker?"
"Yeah your right. Maybe one of us should talk to him after the debrief."
"I'm not doing it." Ying said quickly.
"Dammit Sui, why do you always leave me with the complicated shit?"
"Because I'm quick to decide on something. Just don't chat him up, yeah?"
"Chat who up?" Thatcher's voice spoke out, as Dokkaebi and Ying turned to see the others, hostages in their arms.
'I'm not saying, also no promises Sui." Dokkaebi told him, then Ying.
"Sledge, it's Thatcher. We have the hostages. I repeat, hostages are secured."
"Rodger. On my way now, well done lads. Sledge out."
"Now then, we wait for the chopper and get back to base. Thermite, how did Wash perform?" Thatcher asked him.
"Spectacularly, Thatcher. Kid worked like a charm."
"Good, Six will be pleased."
Back at Hereford Base
Six hours after the mission
"Anyone seen Wash?" Mike asked, as he and a few other operators were sitting in the mess hall, having food.
"Dunno, I heard from Jordan he went to his new room straight after debrief. Hasn't been heard from since." Monika replied
'Maybe he's tired. He literally got deployed on a mission the minute he arrived." Suggested Elzbieta "Ela" Bosak.
"Nah 'cause he seemed fine during the op. Maybe it's something deeper than tiredness." Mike countered.
"Fuck it, I'll go talk to him." Said an unlikely voice. The operators turned around to see Jalal "Kaid" El Fassi leaning on the doorframe.
"Are you sure, Jalal?"
"I'm not Gustaveu, but don't forget I've been in the military since I was 18. I've been through some pretty rough shit, so I'll do the best I can."
"I'll come with you. I was the first operator he spoke to, after all." Grace suggested rather quickly, which got a chuckle out of the operators. "What?"
"Nothing." Eliza said with an innocent smile on her face.
"Alright then. Let's go cheer Wash up." Grace and Jalal left the room.
"Twenty quid Wash and Grace get together by the end of the month." Mike betted immediately.
"You're on." Monika grinned.
Wash's room
Second floor of Hereford Base
Wash was lying on his bed, throwing a tennis ball at the wall constantly. On his bed side table was a picture of all the freelancers he had ever known. The only family he had ever known. Then he heard a soft knock on the door, and a female voice.
"Wash? It's Grace. Can I come in?"
"I wanna be left alone."
"Come on, I can't help if you don't talk to me, Wash."
"Ah, I'm gonna regret this." He muttered, as he stopped bouncing his tennis ball. "Alright, come in but close the door behind you." He heard the door open and close, and looked up to see Grace accompanied by another operator.
"Who's this?" Wash asked curiously.
"The name's Jalal El Fassi. Codename "Kaid"". He said, as he stuck his hand out. Wash gripped it with his own.
"Good to meet you Kaid. Now, what the hell do you guys want?" Wash asked.
Kaid sat next to Wash on his bed. "Listen son, I know what it's like to lose people. To be left alone. To be completely useless in an operation. And then I found Team Rainbow. Six took me in, the other operators taught me how it works. What it means to have a family again. So, come on Wash. Speak. It's better to get it off your chest than holding it in."
Wash took a deep breath. "Did you know I was one of the worst freelancers in my squad? There was Agent York our security specialist, Agent North the sharpshooter, Carolina was an expert in martial arts and Tex was... Well you know Tex. I was known for getting a grappling hook stuck to my balls. There was also the time my AI implantation went wrong. I was left useless both times. So, I bet you don't know what it's like to be alone, do you?"
"I do." Grace said quietly. "Or at least, my friend does. He goes by the name of Tavo Rojas. After discovering too late that the targets of this squad's last SD mission were their own, his unit was broken up, its members reassigned to other teams; soon, under suspicious circumstances, his ex-squad mates started turning up dead. As sole survivor, he seeked retribution for his fallen friends. He was in the same situation as you, Wash. Just because we haven't experienced it personally, doesn't mean we don't know what it feels like."
Wash sighed. "I suppose."
"Have some time off, get some rest, and I guarantee you will feel a lot better. And if not... Well, you've always got us to talk to." Kaid told him.
Wash gave him and Grace a smile. "Thanks guys."
"No problem, Wash. I've got places to be, so I'll leave you two to it." Kaid left the room and went back downstairs.
"Hey Jalal, what happened?" Mike asked, as he saw Jalal come downstairs.
Jalal grinned at his fellow operators. "I left them to it. Not gonna lie, I'm kinda hoping they get together."
"Ha! I'll have that twenty quid now Monika." Mike said.
"Hang on a sec, Mike. They haven't actually got together yet." Monika told him.
"... Asshole."
Monika just grinned.
-o0o0o0o-
"You ok, Wash? Jalal's talk was helpful, wasn't it?" Grace asked.
"Yeah, I suppose it was helpful. I just... I can't help but miss them, y'know? All of them."
"I know." She said softly. She turned to face him and they locked eyes.
"Can I ask you a question, Grace?"
"Yeah sure, go for it."
"Why me? You could have chosen anyone here. I'm new, inexperienced with the work around here."
Grace looked embarrassed, "Hey, I won't judge."
She sighed. "The minute you took off your helmet, my heart just went off on one. After you had explained your backstory, it only made me more determined to help you."
"Help me? Why?"
"I knew a man once. Before he died, he told me 'You don't have to destroy the past, to make a future.' And, I think this actually works."
"Yeah, but that doesn't answer how you're going to help-" Wash was interrupted by a soft kiss on his lips. He slowly closed his eyes and returned the kiss. After a few moments, Grace broke the kiss off, a huge grin on her face. Wash leaned in for a second one, to which she happily accepted. The second kiss was more passionate than the first, and it lasted for a lot longer.
"Happy now?" Wash asked her.
"Hell. Yes." She replied. "I promise you, that I will do everything in my power to help you fit in with this family."
"I'll take all the help I can get. Now come on, let's go join the others now that I'm in a better mood." Wash got off the bed and held out his hand.
"Gladly." She replied, as she grabbed his hand with her own. The two walked downstairs, to see a few operators at the table.
Monika took a £20 note out of her back pocket and handed it to a currently grinning Mike.
"Did you guys seriously bet on us two being a couple?" Wash shook his head in despair.
"Welcome to the family, Wash. I think you'll like it here." Mike said, laughing.
