Chapter 1
Hermione scowled as she eyed the growing pile of files on her small desk. As the holidays neared, so did the deadlines for multiple caseworks in her department. She sighed and started counting down the days until vacation. Just five more days she thought.
It wasn't that she did not enjoy her work. In fact, Hermione was known as the Ministry's workaholic. Scratch that - she was known as the Wizarding World's workaholic. As the youngest Head of the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures, Hermione prided herself in her work, passing over twice the amount of laws than her preceding Department Heads. And even in her free time, Hermione would give speeches and seminars to Hogwarts students on the importance of joining SPEW.
Hermione jumped as a note flew into her office and thumped her on the forehead. "Arrghh" she squealed. It was another note from Harry, the cause of her lack of interest in work these past few days.
Harry had just broken up with Ginny. It came as a surprise to everyone. Harry, with Hermione's help, proposed a very intimate proposal with family and friends surrounding the happy couple. Or at least a happy Harry. As he got down on one knee, the twins whooped and Ron clapped enthusiastically while cheering him on. Hermione couldn't stop smiling. It was such a joyous sight until she caught Ginny's eye. Ginny did not have the smile of a newly engaged woman. Hermione deduced it down to nerves. It wasn't until Hermione and Harry were taking out the trash after the party that they heard muffled sounds. They turned the corner of the Burrow and saw Ginny heavily making out with Seamus. What happened afterwards was just a whirlwind. A distraught Harry was left to break off the engagement.
Another note flew in and brought Hermione back to the present. She read the note and gasped. Harry was getting married. But how? Hermione had thought the wedding was off especially since Ginny made it clear she had been cheating on him for the past three years. No, she could not let her best friend make a mistake. She would put an end to this. Hermione scribbled down a message and sent it flying back to Harry.
Meet me at the Leaky Cauldron at 7.
