My Demons
One shot; Chrono's viewpoint on losing control when Rosette is injured. Inspired by "My Demons" by Starset.
Enjoy!
He watched in horrified silence as her body catapulted through the air, arching as she plummeted to the earth with a hollowing crack. The sound of her bones breaking echoed through him, slicing through him to the core.
"Rosette!" He yelled, sprinting across the wet earth and towards her twisted form. "Rosette!"
"Do not turn your back on me, boy," the devil that had first attacked Rosette cried out, lashing its tail out at Chrono as he ran.
Chrono dodged the attack, rolling across the earth as he skidded to a stop beside Rosette's form. She was breathing, but barely. He could hear the labored sound of her wheezing breaths as she struggled for air. He wouldn't have been surprised if one of her ribs had cracked and punctured a lung on impact.
His body recoiled from the sight of her blood matting her delicate features, rising to his feet with his back turned to the devil still stalking towards him.
"Did that bitches death teach you nothing?" The devil taunted.
A spasm ricocheted through Chrono, turning on the spot, his eyes violently red as he regarded the devil before him. "How dare you…" He snarled, his lips curling up in his rage. "How dare you touch my contractor? How dare you harm Rosette!"
The devil merely chuckled. "Don't tell me you were playing house with that little bitch?"
Chrono roared out in rage, his body convulsing in on itself as his demonic form began draining astral energy from Rosette. The life clock around her neck burst open, the hands upon the clock spinning at a rapid rate as Chrono's rage began to reduce her life.
"DO NOT DEGRADE HER LIKE THAT!" Chrono roared, his body morphing into his true demonic form.
"You've released yourself. Now the games get interesting," the devil snickered, regarding Chrono with disinterest.
He was moving before he had even realized he had decided to attack. His body launched forward, making contact with the body of the devil with a spark of astral energy. "You will pay for harming Rosette!" He yelled with each attack, slicing through the body with effortless swings.
"Damn you!" The devil retaliated, attempting to find contact with Chrono's flesh. It was of no use; Chrono was lost to his rage and nothing could have stopped him.
"Chrono…."
The limp body of his offender fell to the ground, his eyes snapping to the frame of the mangled girl upon the ground. She propped herself up on her elbows, coughing up a bit of blood as she moved.
"Chrono, come back to me." She breathed, reaching out a hand towards him.
"Rosette?" He held onto his rage, watching her with wounded eyes.
"Please, Chrono. Come back."
He couldn't let go of his anger, not just yet. He needed to make sure she was safe, needed to make sure she got help before he let her down again.
"I'm fine, Chrono. I need you, come back." She pushed herself up onto her feet, wobbling against the pain that radiated through her. Too many of her bones were broken, moving was just making the pain worse. But she needed Chrono, needed him to close the connection between them and to stop running down her life.
He was at her side in an instant, his arms tentatively around her body as she leaned in against him.
"Please, Chrono. Come back." She muttered again. "I'm alright, come back."
He could feel his anger subsiding, her hands gripping at the belt of his pants, her head pressed against his chest. "Rosette…"
"Chrono…" she breathed his name, his form slowly deteriorating to his sealed state.
The life clock clicked closed, stopping the flow of time.
"You saved me." Her eyes rolled back into her head, her body falling limp against his as relief flooded through her. Chrono would be okay.
He caught her in his arms, cradling her to his chest gently. No… You saved me.
