The Common Room and You

Seven-year old Scorpius crawled into his mother's lap as she settled down on the couch. Smiling he looked up at her as she returned the smile.

"Mummy," he asked, "What's the Slytherin common room like?" Astoria sighed and ruffled Scorpius' white-blonde hair.

"I knew you'd start getting curious about Hogwarts soon enough."

Scorpius giggled, "So, Mummy. What's it like?"]

"Well, it is a very large common room, with huge emerald-eyed snakes that stand guard at the door. At that Scorpius' eyes became wide with fright.

"Oh no, my little Scorpius, they really are guardians. They are there to protect you, not hurt you. Don't be afraid of them. You'll see when you get to Hogwarts."

The young boy nodded, and, as little minds do, immediately came up with a new question. "Is Slytherin's common room the best. 'Cause I heard granddaddy Malfoy say it was in a dungeon."

Astoria smiled, "Yes, Scorpius, the common room is in a dungeon, but does that mean that it is not the best? The Slytherin common room is the only one I know; I've never seen the others. But I can tell you that it was always very calm down there."

"Like, quiet Mummy?"

"No, sweetie, not quiet. There was an icy coolness to it that always seemed to linger in the air and make you feel calm. It was a good place to think. Does that make sense?" Astoria said, turning to Scorpius.

"A little, but I don't want it to get too cold…or I might freeze like an ice box." Scorpius said, shivering as he did so. Chuckling, Astoria turned her son's small body around so that he faced her.

"You know, the Slytherin common room is where I first met your daddy." Astoria said, "He was sitting in the corner, fairly sad…"

"And did you cheer him up, Mummy?"

"Yes, you could say I cheered him up."

"But why was Daddy sad, Mummy?"

Astoria looked up and gazed at the ceiling.

"Did he fail his OWL?" Scorpius asked innocently.

Astoria gently shook her head, "No, Scorpius he didn't fail his OWL. You see, your father, well, he did some things that he wasn't very happy with. So, he was sad and I comforted him."

Scorpius' face screwed up, processing the new information.

It was just us in the common room that night. He looked so frightened and so helpless. I fell in love with him after that. Now we have wonderful Scorpius. My sweet, sweet, Scorpius.

Astoria thought this to herself while Scorpius became distracted with a toy broomstick resting next to the couch. Suddenly, Scorpius stopped playing and twisted his head to face his mother.

"I'll like the Slytherin common room, won't I, Mummy?"

"Yes dear, you will." Astoria replied.

"And then maybe I'll have a happy ending too, right Mummy?"

"Yes my little Scorpius."

Being with your father is wonderful. There are some things that happened that I'd like to forget, but yes…a happy ending.
