"Here," says the old man to the little girl, "you'll need this."
He hands her a sheaf of pages, finer than the finest Egyptian papyrus, bound with blue-stained leather patterned to resemble his magic box.
"What is it?"
"It's a diary. You write down important things that happen. Keep it close. You'll see me again soon, Tiberia Carmina."
He steps inside the magic box, and it vanishes in a roaring wind.
That night, after the household is asleep, she steals into her fathers study and helps herself to ink and a reed pen.
Today, she writes, something very unusual happened…
