I studied the LCD screen carefully. The figure beside me seemed familiar. It was a woman's figure, with hair in a tight bun, long period style dress, and the faintest hint of grandmother-like features. It dawned on me, I've seen her before. With hast, I jumped from my spot on the floor, and bolted out the door with the boys in my wake. Still clad in our pajamas, we booked it down the stairs and to the concierge desk. Jimmy, an old co-worker of mine, was at the counter dusting. With an abrupt halt, I leaned against the wooden counter and asked if the Madame's portrait was still there. He nodded and grabbed it. Holding it just out of my reach, he asked what he should get in return. Tired of his games, I gave in. I asked what he wanted and he leaned over the desk and forcefully planted his lips on mine. Surprised and genuinely appalled, I pulled away and took the picture from him. Zak looked at me with confusion clear on his face and asked if I was just going to brush that off. Without hesitation, I countered with the fact that I was not currently with anyone so it would not matter if it happened. He scowled and reluctantly let it go turning to the portrait in my hand. Pointing out the similarities between both, I went on to tell the boys and Aaron's camera my experience with Madame LeNou. As Zak admired the pictures, my gaze was strangely drawn to the staircase. The figure of a woman's back caught my eye. I requested Zak to look at that very spot; he questioned why when he saw nothing. I told him that was exactly why and beckoned him to follow me. I rounded the corner and saw nothing. My anxiety level rose as I tiptoed down the hall. I was mysteriously led to a bedroom at the rear of the hall which no one was allowed to enter. I gazed inside, seeing no one, I entered with trepidation and Zak holding my left hand. Slowly we reached the middle of the room when we saw the Madame. She turned and smiled, floating toward us. Without hesitation, I too smiled; relieved it was her and not a malevolent spirit. She greeted me, saying it has been too long and that I have grown into a beautiful young woman. I thanked her, but saw sorrow behind her eyes. She seemed to look behind me then as if warning me, requested I turn around. I did as she said, finding what she had looked at. Bree, a young girl I thought to me mine own daughter, stood before me. My breath caught and slowly I fell to my knees. She looked me in the eyes and I knew. She ran into my arms and my world came down around us. Tears leaked from my eyes as I repeated her name along with please and no. I felt myself become weaker, not only from my water-filled eyes but from her new ability to drain energy. She pulled away against my wishes, as did i. placing her small hand upon my cheek, she wiped away a tear and stated that she loved me. With that, she was gone. I heard the rustle of Zak's jeans as he knelt down next to my shuddering form. He wrapped his protective arms around me as I wept. I caught the Madame's soft whisper promising me that she was safe.
