For my best friend, because I introduced her to the fandom and then ignored it and her requests for Ike/Soren fics and art. |D;
Drip.
A raindrop fell on the yellowed pages of an old tome detailing wind magic. Soren stared at the dark circle spreading in his book. Then came another one.
The mage made his decision fast, finished casting his spell and thus sealed the fate of another enemy. Soren scanned the area for more foes, did not locate any close by and dashed to where he knew Ike would be.
With a single strike, the blue-haired commander took down an enemy fighter. Glancing around, he noticed his tactician approaching. Ike greeted him when the short mage was close by.
"Is something wrong?" the tall swordsman asked.
"No. I just thought I'd inform you that it is starting to rain", Soren said, and looked further away, where the noises of battle were coming from. Clearly the most aggressive fighting was taking place there.
The mage did not have to wonder why was Ike not in the heart of the battle. Obviously he had been; the enemies just had been no match for the skilled swordsman, and the situation had easily turned to the Greil Mercenaries' favor.
"Eh? Oh, you're right", Ike said as he noticed some raindrops falling on himself. "Does that affect our strategy?"
Soren was still observing how the fight was going. "Not really. I'm sure most of our troops can take the terrain change into account." He turned to look at the commander, his wind tome still in hand.
"Soren, your book will get wet", Ike noticed. "I'm aware. I will have to try to limit how much I need to use magic", the shorter person answered.
"That's not good. I can't put you at risk. You should come with me, Soren" Ike raised his voice.
Soren turned to look at his commander's face to see him completely serious. The mage rapidly turned his head away to hide the sudden blush.
Surely Ike meant that he can't risk the tactician for the army's sake, not for his own… But nevertheless being reminded Ike needed him, worried for him always made Soren feel a little warmer inside.
"I… I suppose teamwork would be beneficial…" the mage muttered.
The commander hadn't quite thought of that and exclaimed: "You can't fight without your books! Just come with me. I'll protect you."
Soren couldn't bear to look at the swordsman now. Not that he minded Ike protecting him, but looking so weak embarrassed the tactician. "I-Ike… I can still help. I'll get a staff…" "Nah, the fight is going great. You can help heal afterwards. Besides some enemy might find you if you left for the camp from here."
Soren couldn't argue with the last point. He was practically defenseless in close combat, or any other physical form of fighting. The kind of fight he might get into if leaving unprepared and worse, unarmed.
Ike noticed the tactician's resistance weakening and grabbed his much smaller hand. "Come on. We'll stay away from the middle of the battle", the swordsman cheerily said and started walking. Soren had no choise but to try to keep up.
If it starts raining really bad, you can take cover under my cape", Ike smiled. "And make sure to get behind me if an enemy appears."
Soren felt embarrassed hiding behind the most important person of the army, but he knew Ike was right. Ike would survive anything. "Yes, Ike", he softly answered, and firmly clutched Ike's palm.
