A Matter of Trust
Blaine didn't know what to do. He wanted to reach out and comfort David, but his boyfriend was looking at him with utter betrayal written all over his face.
"Dave," he tried, finally reaching out and putting his hand over one of his boyfriend's. "You have to believe me."
"Are you going to tell me that it wasn't what it looked like?" David spat out, pulling his hand away.
"It was just a song. You arrived at the wrong time and…" He trailed off at his boyfriend's glare. "I'm sorry that was the wrong thing to say." He exhaled slowly and tried again. "I wish I wasn't so clumsy when it comes down to relationships," he said quietly, more to himself than to David. "What I meant, is that we were rehearsing and it's a love song so what you saw, was just us practicing the number. I wasn't going to do anything with him no matter what it looked like."
David clenched his hands into tight fists, the image of that other Dalton Warbler with his hands around Blaine's face still engraved in his mind. He looked at Blaine, really looked at him, the way he was looking at David right in the eyes trying to show him that he had nothing to hide, the way his hand was still resting at the center of the table where he had tried to hold David's hand.
David's shoulders relaxed and he put his hand back on the table but didn't reach out for Blaine's.
"I trust you," he said. "I'm sorry," he added after a moment.
Blaine nodded reaching for him again and this time David turned his hand over and entwined their fingers together.
"I like that your jealous," Blaine said, smiling. "It means that you care but I want you to trust me. We're both new to all this but we're making it work."
David nodded finally smiling back at Blaine.
