She must have been there for hours just staring into the horizon, just waiting. The bench was old and vandalised. It stood alone on top of the cliffs overlooking the sea. It was calm up there and many people came and sat but never stayed long until they'd run off to make sandcastles in the sun upon the clean sand. Cat sat patiently thinking. It was Valentine's Day and she should've been on a date with Robbie but that was impossible. Ever since the cancer took the brave young man's life she had been lost without him, so distant as though she was in her own little bubble of pain. Every breathe she took was for two people. She promised Robbie she'd live the rest of her life in honour of him and that's exactly what she planned to do. She would take his advice, to grab every opportunity with both hands and to let no one get in the way of what she wanted.
Her head was full of his face and the memories they both shared. A smile spread across her face lifting her rosy cheeks at the thought of when they went on the picnic. It was a fun memory. She could almost smell the bowl of rhubarb and sugar under her nose. The picnic took place on the exact bench she was currently sitting on. His smile so comforting and his voice soothing as though it was a lullaby. Feeling in his arms was the best feeling, his warmth radiating from his body and comforting her. The masculine aftershave he wore joining the sweet smell of the rhubarb in her nostrils. This all came back to her and then her favourite part was where he looked her in the eye, his deep brown eyes not breaking contact. His lips parting to let the word she longed to hear out. 'I love you'
The memory brought tears to her eyes and the craving to be in his arms one last time came back to her. They'd been through so much laughs, cries, good times and bad times that he was hard to let go. She reached out and let her gentle hand stroke the bench where he once sat. A single tear rolled down her cheek and dropped on to her watch. The hands indicated it was now seven o'clock. She reached into her bag and pulled out a piece of paper with a note written on it reading;
The time had come,
The moment was there.
You pushed aside all your fears,
And told me to save my tears.
It was for the best,
The suffering faded,
As you shut your eyes for eternal rest.
You had come so far,
It was far enough.
The fight you put up,
it showed you were tough.
You can finally be at piece,
Away from the cruel world.
You won't be forgotten,
so good night and sleep tight
Forever your Kitten
I love you Robbie.
Although she pretended she didn't like to be called 'Kitten' secretly she adored it. She put the letter in a red envelope and secured it shut. Taking out her perfume, she sprayed the envelope and kissed it softly. She hugged it for a while with tears streaming down her face. On her iPod Jason Mraz – I won't give up played on repeat. This is the song that Robbie listened to in his last few hour as Cat comforted him. At 7:18 she took out a lantern and secured the note to it. She sprayed this with her sweet smelling perfume too. It was darker by now and everyone had gone, it was just Cat. At 7:30 it was finally time. The lantern ignited and she walked to the edge. 'Save a space for me in heaven Robbie, I'll see you soon' She let the lantern from her grip watching it rise above the sea. The stars were out and her red hair blew with the wind as she longed for him back.
