Movement
Rodney McKay entered his room quietly; it was late Tuesday night or very early Wednesday morning depending on how you wanted to put it and he just wanted to go to bed. As he moved over to the table beside the bed Rodney removed his radio and put it on the table; that done he turned his attention to the man sleeping on the bed.
Rodney looked at John and shook his head. As still as the other man was during the day was how not still he was when asleep. John twitched and shifted his arms and legs every few minutes reminding Rodney of a large cat. Stifling a chuckle when John seemed to bat at the air Rodney gently sat down on the edge of the bed. Reaching out he gently brushed John's hair off his face smiling when John's movements stilled immediately.
Slipping off the bed Rodney began stripping off his uniform and tossing it into a corner containing other dirty clothes. As he pulled on a pair of pajama bottoms Rodney heard movement coming from the bed. Turing he saw John in a fight with the blankets that covered him. Shaking his head Rodney walked around the bed to his side and pulled back the offending blankets. Crawling under them he heard John say his name.
"R'dney?"
"You expecting someone else?" Rodney asked as he lay down.
"No," John glared at him the best his sleep muddled mind would let him.
"Are you alright? You were moving around a lot."
John shook his head, "I'm fine." Suddenly a yawn broke across his face.
Rodney chuckled, "If you say so, go back to sleep."
John didn't reply and when Rodney looked at him he saw that John was already sleeping again. Shaking his head Rodney closed his eyes but before he could fall asleep a foot connected with his leg. Sighing Rodney rolled over on his side and watch John twitch and swat an invisible things.
Finally Rodney simply gathered John in his arms and held the other man not surprised in the least when John stopped moving and snuggled closer. This was how it had been for months. John would twitch and move around in his sleep until Rodney wrapped his arms around him. Then John would be as calm and still as he is during the day. As Rodney drifted into sleep he began to wonder why that was. Why someone so calm in the day could be such a spastic sleeper and why John always calmed down when he touched him. Unfortunately he fell asleep before he could figure out why or remember to ask John.
The reason was simple though. Every time John was calm was when he was near Rodney and he felt better knowing the other man was near and safe. When Rodney wasn't around John was anything but calm going off into his own little world. John had discovered early in their relationship that even in his sleep he needed the Rodney to ground him to the world.
