The sky was darkening as the two figures approached. Riku looked up, dropping the ball as he noticed who it was. The people behind him stood as well, each calling out a various greeting. Riku stepped forward to meet them, pausing as he reached the street and aware of the others edging forward. He gave a smile which was answered and turned to the other one, opening his mouth to speak. The girl spoke before he could.
"Sora is with me now."
He stared at her with blank eyes, not fully understanding what had just been said. The smile that had been stretching itself across his face dropped as he took in the smug girl and guilty boy before him. Gasps were heard from behind, and the smallest of grins crept on her face. The boy at her side looked anyone but at him, shifting his weight and playing nervously with the hem of his shirt.
His mouth opened and shut and he knew he looked foolish but he couldn't stop it, even as a victorious grin stretched across her face, twisting it and slowly revealing the person he had always known she was. She brushed an invisible piece of something from her skirt and he knew whatever she said next would kill him more than her previous words.
"You should have known he wouldn't continue this...thing you two had. He finally realized how unnatural it was." He was biting his lip hard enough to bleed but not saying a word to claim her own were lies. "He's finally with me now; with a girl, the way he should be. You'll realize it eventually too." She smiled pityingly at him -sugar sweet and toxic- and he wanted to slap her. He wanted to scream. He wanted to cry.
Two years together, and now he was saying he decided he didn't like guys? Just because people had been giving them a hard time lately? This wasn't the boy he knew. He wouldn't cower under such pressures. Surely not...surely...not. But as Kairi turned to walk away he followed obediently. Riku finally found his voice. "Sora!" He called, aware his voice was cracking and he sounded like he was breaking.
He didn't care. The teen faltered in his steps before they picked up once more. He walked away and he didn't look back, not as Riku feel to his knees, dug his palms into his eyes and screamed. Not as his friends swarmed around him, glaring daggers at his retreating back, offering what little comfort they could and pulling the sobbing wreck to his feet and off the street as the final light of day began to fade.
He didn't pause until he was out of sight and only then did he allow the tears to slip down his cheeks as he leaned against the brick wall of the nearby alley. "I'm so sorry Riku." he murmured brokenly, swiping half-heartedly at the tears. "But I'm not as strong as you are."
