Bella's POV

CHAPTER ONE

A large hand grabbed my arm, and I struggled to contain a scream; I knew it wouldn't turn out good for me because it never did. I felt another blood vessel break beneath my skin, and I knew there'd be a bruise showing soon enough. He threw me on the bed and hit the side of my face with his palm, and I could tell my cheekbone would break if he so much as touched it again. I had had enough already and tried to push him off, which caused me to fall to the floor, and it made the pain worse. So much worse.

A knee to my stomach came.

Then another.

A kick into my ribs was next.

After what seemed like forever of hitting and kicking, he finally stopped and walked out. Now covered in shades of black, blue, and purple, I managed to gather up my things from his room and walk downstairs on my shaky legs.

I heard audible sobs coming from the living room, and I peered in. He was crying like he usually was after the weekly beatings, and every time I saw him, it broke my heart.

"Edward, are you okay?" I strained to whisper the words, just like I had for the past six months.

He looked up and nodded. "Yeah, I'm fine. Put some makeup on your face before you leave, though."

This is what it had come to - wearing makeup all the time; dressing in long sleeve shirts and jeans in the summer; lying to my mom about how I would always be "falling" and hearing about how I needed to be more careful.

I walked into the bathroom and applied some foundation and concealer to my skin, wincing when the makeup pad made contact with my cheek. It barely covered it this time, and I hoped that the next time he hit me, it wouldn't be near my face. The next time. I snorted at the fact that I knew there'd be another day like this.

I left his house without so much as a word and hopped into my truck. I stared out the windshield at the black pavement the whole ride home, my eyes not wavering once. About ten minutes later, I arrived at my house and parked the truck, walking inside.

"Bella? Is that you?" I heard my mom call sleepily. I was actually surprised she was home on a Friday night.

I tried my hardest to keep my walk as natural as possible when I went into her bedroom. "Yeah, it's me."

"What happened to your face?" she asked, a look of genuine concern on her face.

I repositioned my backpack on my shoulder and grimaced. "I fell down Edward's stairs."

"Again?" She sat up. "Honey, that's the third time this month."

I nodded. "Sure is."

A/N: I know it's short, but it's only the introduction. I also know it's kind of sad, but it needed to be written; it's been in my head awhile. Please review! (:
