With a sickening noise, the demon's knife made contact with Magnus' body. I turned around in horror as he staggered back and hit a wall. As he slumped to the floor, I ran to him. Nothing else mattered. Not the demons we were fighting. Not Clary or Isabelle. Not even Jace. Something stronger than my parabatai was pulling me to Magnus.
Dodging weapons and demons, I ran as fast as I could. By the time I got to Magnus, he had pulled the knife out but was bleeding profusely from the wound.
"NO!" I cried as I knelt by Magnus.
Taking off my shirt, I tried placing it on his chest, but it was soaked through in seconds. Frustrated, I threw it aside and grabbed my stele. Tears were blurring my vision so badly that I couldn't draw anything. Magnus grabbed my arm. When he spoke, his voice was strained.
"Alec. Stop." Tears streamed down my face as I looked at Magnus. He was so pale and his once bright cat eyes were getting duller by the second.
"There's nothing you can do."
Panic rose up inside me. I couldn't let him die! Throwing my stele away, I grabbed Magnus' face in both of my hands.
"You're a warlock…DO SOMETHING!" I didn't even try to keep calm. My voice was choked because of my crying and my hands were shaking violently.
Magnus didn't say anything, he just looked at me with such sadness that I started to rub my thumbs over his cheeks.
"I can't lose you." I whispered.
Magnus, looking weaker by the second, reached up and grabbed my shoulder. "Come here." He begged.
It was so quiet, that I thought I imagined it. I closed my eyes and shook my head. This wasn't happening. This couldn't be real. But when I opened my eyes, Magnus was still lying against the wall, a horrifying pool of blood surrounding him.
I leaned in and kissed his cheek. Then his forehead. His other cheek. His nose. His chin. Maybe if I kissed every square inch of his face, he wouldn't die. He would stay alive, for me.
"Alec." Magnus breathed.
I stopped and looked into his eyes, keeping my face close. It looked like a struggle for Magnus just to breathe. More tears flowed down my cheeks. Magnus' eyes almost rolled into the back of his head, but he blinked and focused on me.
"I love you." He whispered. I choked back a cry as Magnus's grip on my shoulder loosened.
"I love you too." I sobbed.
Leaning in, I pressed my lips to Magnus' and kissed him with all that I had. His lips were cold and dry, which scared me. But, he kissed me back. For the slightest of seconds, I forgot where I was. I forgot that Magnus was dying in my hands. Everything was all right. Then, just as quickly as that feeling came on, Magnus stopped kissing me. His hand fell from my shoulder and I knew, without looking up, that he had gone.
