Note: AU where Tonks lived
The meadow was large and a glorious space of grass and meadow flowers, grass rustling gently in the breeze. There was a narrow brook flowing through it choked with weeds. Tall water-mint with pale lavender flowers lined up like around the brook.
That's the view that Charlie got to see on a daily basis now.
After leaving his dragons behind, Charlie picked up the retirement plan in a not so stellar manner. He wanted to get his hands dirty; he wanted to make a difference. But the damage had been done to his hands from a heated accident; he couldn't feel a thing. His mother tried to smother him with every motherly fiber in her being once she heard of his return.
Thankfully, his best friend had come to save the day. Tonks survived the war, albeit not coming out of it the same as she was when they were in Hogwarts. While he made due with his new retirement, Tonks offered to stay with him to pick up her own pieces.
It was agreed that they couldn't be lovers, but having your best friend living in the room next to you wasn't a bad idea at the time.
Looking out in the meadow now beyond the cottage, Charlie could say that retiring early wasn't so bad with a view like this.
"I have quite the eye for amazing scenery don't I?" Tonks asked, sitting in the grass next to Charlie.
He turned to her, smiling softly. "You always knew what looked best."
Her brown hair turned pink as she grinned mischievously, despite it not reaching her eyes completely. "It's one of my best qualities."
Charlie laughed at her before leaning his head on her shoulder and sighing with content. "I'm thankful for it," he said.
"I'm thankful to help out, Charlie," she replied.
He held her hand in a platonic manner, looking beyond at the sun setting in the sky. Even though he couldn't physically feel it, Charlie knew that her hand was warm and encouraging.
"What do you think my next act as a retired man be?" he asked.
Tonks tapped her chin. "How about we have some of your mum's famous stew, and we'll come back out and watch the stars once it's dark enough.
Retirement with his best friend wasn't so bad after all. "I'd like that."
"Good," Tonks said as the pair continued looking in the distance of the beautiful meadow.
