This is for SilveredScales. I'm sorry honey, it's not exactly what you wanted. I just... I started out with a fluffy intention, but then the idea formed and I was lost. Still, I was sad after writing it...

They lay close together in the long grass near some dog-rose bushes at the edge of a field, knuckles and ankles bumping together softly. The night lay thick around them in the heady sweet scent of flowers, the half moon shining softly down on them through a speck of clouds.

They had been tumbling around on the ground, play fighting much like they did in canine form, yet with more hesitation and awareness of each other's bodies. Eventually they had fallen into their individual heaps in the grass, panting and snickering, gazing up at the sky.

"Why do you watch the moon so often, Remus?" Sirius' voice was soft and the tone light, but Remus understood that it was something Sirius had been wondering for some time.

He turned his head to look at Sirius' profile, the mud-streaked cheeks dim in the weak light.

"Just because it pains me to see something it doesn't mean it can't be beautiful."

Humor glinted in Sirius' eyes as he also turned to look at his friend. "Nursing a masochistic streak, Moony? I never would have guessed..."

Remus smiled and turned back to the bright slice of light in the sky. He frowned slightly and tilted his head.

"When I look at it," he said slowly after a while, "I remember how lonely I felt when I was little." He sighed and the silence spread around them once more.

It came as a surprise for him when Sirius suddenly rolled over and came to lie directly on top of him, and he lifted his hands over his chest in instinctive defense. This, however, only managed in getting his right hand squashed between their chests while his left slipped to lie with the palm against Sirius' side.

"You'll never have to be alone again. I promise." The whispered words made Remus smile softly even though Sirius couldn't see it where he lay spread over Remus, his nose rubbing softly into Remus' neck, his hair splayed in moonlit tresses over Remus' collarbones. Remus' hands were starting to feel very warm, as did every other part of his body, goosebumps were rising on his skin, and his stomach felt like it was full of glowing embers which were coming to life more with every second. He could feel Sirius' heartbeat beneath his palm, its rhythm calm and soothing accompanied with the fluttering feeling of Sirius' exhales over his neck.

Remus fervently wished that all there ever was to the world was this, this, this, and in between two beats of Sirius' heart he finally realised why he kept watching.
