A Lion's Comfort
Lucy spotted the statue out of the corner of her eye as she followed her family across the square on their way to the train station; today she, Susan, Peter, and Edmund were leaving for the country where they would be safe. She paused and turned to look at the statue closely.
It was a lion standing on a short pillar. Its head was bowed so it seemed to be gazing right into her eyes. Made of copper, the statue was turning a green color. The different shades of brown and green made Lucy think the lion bore battle scars. Flakes of ash coated his stone mane.
Tears filled Lucy's eyes as she stared at the lion. It reminded her of Daddy who was off fighting in the war. She wondered if the lion had left behind a family, if he would ever see them again.
The lion's face was fierce with pride, soft with love, and terrible with wrath. Lucy shivered. There was something comforting about his face, though he was nothing more than a statue. As the girl looked into his eyes, she thought them full of understanding and sadness. Lucy slowly smiled, her heart a little lighter. She wanted to hug him and stay within his protection.
"Come on," Susan nudged her, impatient.
Lucy looked over her shoulder at her sister and then cast a last quick glance at the lion. She resumed walking quickly to catch up with her mother and brothers. She frowned. When she had looked a final time at the lion, it seemed his eyes had come alive; the stone, green, curved eyes had gazed down on her with love and comfort, soft brown pools filled with unshed tears. The girl tried to look back at the statue as Susan grasped her hand and hurried her along. Had she only imagined it?
"No time for daydreaming, Lu," Susan scolded lightly.
Lucy was silent, and could only wonder.
