"I'm so glad we are about to get that child killer out of this world for good, so everyone else can live in peace," said Percy to Paul and Brutal as he walked away from the door and put his feet up on the desk with his hands behind his head.
"I can't believe we are about to let that happen," Paul said to Brutal, as a few people began to set up a protest outside of the mile.
"What are we suppose to do, Paul? It is going to happen. They found him guilty of murder," said Brutal.
"But you know just as well as everyone else in the mile that he isn't able to kill a fly, Brutal. We can try to say something instead of not doing anything. It's worth a try. We are about to kill an innocent man, and everyone in the town knows that. You see the people out there! This is not just going to go away," said Paul.
As Paul and Brutal stood at the door watching the people yelling, "SAVE JOHN COFFEY!", the warden and his wife walked into the mile.
"What in the hell is going on around here?" said the warden. "Where is John and what are they talking about?"
"Remember John Coffey is getting executed in two days," said Brutal.
"Wait a minute," said Mrs. Detterick as she walked down to the last cell on the left, "We talked about this, William. You were supposed to fix this. SOMEONE OPEN THIS CELL NOW! This is the man that saved my life. I won't let this happen to him. How could you do this behind my back?"
"Marjorie, I'm not letting anything happen, I swear to you. I spoke to Percy last Wednesday, and told him that the board and I came to a decision that he wasn't the one who murdered those little girls. He was just trying to save their lives. There wasn't any evidence and after what he did for you that night at our house, they couldn't believe it. I told Percy the execution was overturned. DIDN'T I PERCY?"
"Ummm," as Percy tried quickly to get up from the desk with a puzzled look on his face, "I tried to tell them last week..."
"Shut up Percy," said Brutal as he threw Percy up against the first cell. "Why in the hell didn't you tell us? We should put you in the chair for wanting this innocent man killed."
"So usa sayn isa going home Mr. Detterick?" John Coffey said.
Mrs. Detterick said, "Yes, John Yes. You are going to be a free man again and reunited with your family. Isn't that great news John?"
"Yes mam it is," as John broke out in tears. "Thank you so much mam."
"No John, Thank you for saving my life. You deserve a second chance at life. Make the best of it," said Mrs. Detterick.
Paul, Brutal, and Mr. Detterick, walks into John's cell with his release papers. Mr. Detterick said, "John this is what I waited a week for. I had to get the paperwork and a release date together before I gave you the news. You are a free man."
"It was good knowing you, John. I'm sorry we had to meet like this, but I'm glad to know you," said Brutal.
Paul steps up slowly, "Well Mr. Coffey today is your day. Everyone is in your corner and look at this. You be careful out there and watch your back. Before you leave, we want to know if you would like to come back and help us out on the mile from time to time."
"Of course I would boss," said Coffey, as they all walked out of the cell, "Just let me know when."
"You come back whenever you feel ready. We will be right here waiting on you." said Paul.
"That's it big guy," said Brutal, when they got to the door.
John stood there looking outside at the people as they chanted in awe. He finally starts to push the door open slowly as he took baby steps outside.
