Disclaimer: Vampire Diaries (TV show) and its characters aren't mine. I only write fan fiction for fun and entertainment.
Also, please don't steal or duplicate my work under your name!
A/N: This is a little AU. Caroline isn't involved in the whole vampire drama. Instead she lives up until some point just like everyone else in Mystic Falls. Ignorant. Until my fic that is! No fluff, no pairings... just a little character exploration.
A/N2: Please note that my other (older...) fan works have been taken down and can only ATM be found on my personal writing comm. If you want to read them (VD, SV and many more) then please just join it and enjoy...

Is this how numb feels like, wondered Caroline as she walked down the loud crowded corridors of her school. All around her people were bustling, happy, loud and full of life. But to Caroline it seemed that it was all light years away. She felt lonely and pensive. Her life as she knew it was no more. Instead of gossiping with her friends and partying all she could see was darkness, isolation and emptiness.
One week... One week ago everything had changed. Everything. Nothing would be the same anymore, knew Caroline. Not when all of her life suddenly changed. And all it took was one sudden event. So unbelievable, so impossible that she would have never thought of it. And yet, it happened.
One week ago her mother, sheriff of Mystic Falls was murdered and Caroline saw it all. She watched as her throat was ripped out of her, and she watched as her mother took her last shuddering, ragged breath. All the while hiding like a coward, praying that she wouldn't be found.
A rabid animal attack. The official explanation was far from the truth... But even when asked, Caroline would repeat the lie. Yes, a rabid animal attack, that's what it had been...
Yet she knew that this wasn't true. No rabid animal attacked her mother that night, one week ago. Caroline Forbes knew the truth... the truth that all her friends around her, all those people that she usually saw everyday had something bigger to fear than just a rabid animal attack.
They all needed to fear the darkness, and with it the creatures that strived through it.
She took a shuddering breath, trying to push away the images of that night. Instead she put on her false smile and nodded at a boy in front of her. Cheerleader Caroline was needed again.
She placed the mask of care-freeness back on and followed. It was school time, and school time wasn't the right time to think thoughts of evil vile creatures that murdered mothers and left girls with a broken home.
No, these thoughts were better thought at night. At home. When she would curl up in her bed, after having barricaded her home, to make sure that at least the creatures and the darkness stayed out, if the thoughts couldn't be avoided.
And the thoughts could never be avoided.
