Author's Note:Thanks to Melinda (carylfan10) for writing "You're My Home." A sequel began forming itself in my head almost immediately, and would not go away. Thanks also to Leigh Ann (leighann415) for suggesting the perfect Disney movie. The rest kind of fell together perfectly on its own, if I may say so! I hope this lives up to the original story!
Niles glanced at his watch. It was still early. Daphne and David were the best and most important things in his life. After the day he'd had, he wanted to enjoy their company. "Let's watch a movie together," he suggested.
Daphne grinned mischievously. The idea of watching a romantic movie snuggled in Niles' arms was always welcome. She got up to go to the cabinet where they kept their DVD's. She selected one and showed it to Niles.
Niles smiled, but shook his head. "My love, I meant the three of us. But I promise you, we'll watch something else later." His grin told her exactly what he had in mind for after the movie.
Daphne nodded. "I'm going to hold you to that. Let's watch a Disney movie, then. She quickly flipped through that stack, stopping at one. "How about The Lion King?"
"All right. It's rather shamelessly ripped off of Shakespeare's Hamlet, but it does have a certain charm."
Daphne rolled her eyes, now well used to her husband's need to mention a connection to classic literature at every opportunity. She kissed him. "I'll go and fetch David."
Niles nodded. Her kiss served as a reminder of just how lucky he was. A moment later, Daphne and David made their way down the stairs. "What movie are we going to watch?"
"Your father and I were thinking about The Lion King," Daphne answered.
"That's a girls' movie!" David made a "yuck" face.
Daphne nearly laughed. "Does that mean you don't want to watch it?"
David considered the question. If he said no, he'd probably be sent back up to his room to finish his homework. Even a girls' movie was better than that! "I'll watch it." He sat Indian style on the floor.
Daphne was grateful there was a bit of the Moon boys in her son. Now that her father was gone, she was glad to see reminders of him in David. She smiled to herself as she put the DVD in and hit Play. Moments later, she and Niles were seated together on the couch as the opening notes of "Circle of Life" began to play. Daphne felt herself getting swept up into the story. There was something comforting about hearing the familiar songs. When Simba began to sing about how he wanted to be king, she and Niles laughed as they heard David singing along.
"I'm brushing up on looking down, I'm working on my roar!"
"I thought you said this was a girls' movie," Daphne said.
David blushed. "This part's not!"
Niles and Daphne shared a smile. Soon they reached the part where Simba was no longer a young lion cub. When he was reunited with his childhood friend, Nala, Daphne moved herself even closer to Niles. Just as the music began, she whispered to him, "Can you feel the love tonight?"
"Always, my love." Niles kissed her. He squeezed her hand, realizing how the movie had made her relive the loss of her father.
As the movie neared its end, Daphne realized that David had actually fallen asleep on the floor. Gently she picked him up, glad that he was still small enough to carry upstairs. As she put him to bed, a memory suddenly flashed in her mind. Once, on a family trip when she was a little girl, she'd fallen asleep in the car on the way back. Her father had carried her into her room, safely tucking her in.
Apparently, she didn't need to travel to Africa in order to see the circle of life. It had been right here all along.
The End
