A Best Friend

A/N: Just something I wrote a while ago, that I decided could be a fairly good story. Enjoy.

Disclaimer: I own nothing.

Summary: They got married fifteen years ago today. We should be celebrating, old friend. We should be having a party with all the kids they were going to have. Instead… we're scared for the one child they were robbed of.

A Best Friend

You're looking at that old photograph again. Dammit, that must have been the third time in the past two days. You miss him, eh? Yes, well, I can't blame you for that. I miss him too. I have for years. I have a right to; he was a good friend of mine, after all. A best mate. But there's a difference between a best mate and a best friend, isn't there?

I doubt you think so. A friend and a mate are the same thing, after all, right? Well… no. You were his best friend. His one and only best friend. We were his best mates. See the difference? There's one best friend, and three best mates. So you should miss him twice as much, shouldn't you? And you do. You've missed him twice as long as I have, I bet. They got married fifteen years ago today. We should be celebrating, old friend.

We should be having a party with all the kids they were going to have. Instead… we're scared for the one child they were robbed of. I actually still can't register the fact that they go married fifteen years ago, and were so happy. We were all so happy then. You had felt abandoned years before their wedding day. For an extra two and a half years you thought you were being left behind.

And you're a berk for thinking that.

How many times do you remember people talking about us? Do you remember what they'd say? "Oh there goes Sirius Black and Remus Lupin." No, Sirius. It was never you and I. It was never James and Peter, never James and I, never Sirius and Peter. Hell, Sirius! It was never even Lily and James! It was always you and James.

"There goes that Sirius Black and James Potter; a fine catch they'd be!" And even when James and Lily got together it was always you and him. When were James and Sirius going to pull another prank? When were they going to start another trend? Sure, sometimes they'd say, "When is Sirius going to settle down like James?"

"Who is James with again?"

"The broad – Head Girl. Lily Evans!"

"I've said it before and I'll say it again, lasses. Sirius or James would be a great catch. Girlfriend or not."

Even on their wedding day, who was the star? You stood up, ready to give your traditional Best Man's Speech. James stopped dancing with to come on stage with you, and you slung your arms around each other entertaining the crowd with stories and memories and anything that popped into your head. You were always number one for James; and he's still number one for you, even though he's gone.

Remember the big fight Lily and James got into? It was about three months after the wedding. You have to remember. It was about you.

"Where were you last night?"

"Out with Sirius," James had replied.

"You go out with him more than you go out with me—"

"Lily, he's my best friend—"

"Yes, James. But when we got married it was Lily and James best friends. Sirius and James were no longer best friends! But that's all I ever hear anyway! That's all anyone ever remembers about anything! It's always Sirius and James! Sirius and James! They don't even remember how long it took me to say yes to your offers!"

And do you remember what James replied? Do you remember what he said?

"Sirius is my best friend."

James is gone, Sirius. But you've got me now, Remus Lupin, you know. But I guess Lily was right. That even after death it's still "Sirius and James! Sirius and James!"

Forever it will stay this way, then, huh? Whoever said, "'til death do us part," never met James Potter and Sirius Black.
