Madeleine's Dream

As I closed my eyes
And prepared for a
Peaceful night's sleep

The sleep of a woman
That is no longer a child
The sleep of a mother who at last loves her son

Just as sleep over took me
An image appeared before my eyes
A hauntingly beautiful vision

My son was before me
Wrapped in the arms of an angel
I smiled at the sight of them

Only to have it fade fast
When they suddenly started to pull away
Into the surrounding darkness

I cried out Erik's name
Over and over again
But I could not reach him

All I could do was
Watch as he slowly
Slipped away

I screamed and shouted to the darkness
How can you take him away?
Now that I realize how much I love him

But my only reply
Was silence
As I wept there in the darkness

I awoke suddenly to
My own scream
As it echoed through the empty house

For I would learn all to soon
That I in fact had lost my son
All because of my stupid pride

Pride that would not let me see
The amazing child in front of me
Until it was too late
