It's just another simple voice mail message.
"I'll pick you up and we'll do dinner by the fire and we'll just watch it snow."
It's from a year ago.
"I love you and I can't wait to see you tonight.
I've been thinking about you all day long."
She pushes nine to save.
She still can't erase.
Emily sat on her couch in her living room. She and Hotch had broken up a year before. He left the BAU shortly after their break up. She picked up her phone and dialed her voice mail. She listened to one of the messages from Hotch.
He said, "Hey, Em. I can't wait for our date tonight. I want to see you as soon as possible. I wish I could've seen you at work, but Jack was sick. Jessica is going to take care of him for us tonight. I love you, Emily. I'll see you later."
Emily loved listening to the message. She loved hearing Aaron's voice. She listened to it almost everyday. She saved the message- again.
Cause it makes her feel close.
Makes her smile and it's like he's with her almost.
Until the tears take over, she's still in Hell.
But she tells herself she's ready to let him go.
Cause that makes her feel close.
Listening to Hotch's voice made her feel close to him. Emily began to cry. She still felt like he was right there with her. She wished he was.
She kept telling herself that she wants to let him go. It made her feel better. But Hotch would always be gone and she didn't know where he was now.
It's just a worn-out Notre Dame T-shirt.
She's gotten mad and tried to throw that thing away at least a hundred times.
But she's got it on tonight.
He used to wear it on the weekend, just running around.
Probably forgot he even left it behind.
She says it keeps her warm.
Oh, but it's so much more.
That night, Emily was sitting on the couch wearing Hotch's shirt. She knew she'd have to throw it out eventually. But, honestly, she wanted to keep it. She'd already tried throwing it away plenty of times.
Hitch used to wear the shirt when he was just staying in the house. It was old and he probably didn't even want it. When he packed his bags and left, Emily found it sitting in the drawer.
Whenever JJ asked her why she kept it, she would always say it kept her warm at night. She would never tell JJ the real reason. It made her feel close to him and it still smelled kind of like him.
Close to saying goodbye,

Emily would have to move on eventually. She had to forget about Hotch. He was in her past. She had to start a new future. She would have to get out of the house and maybe start dating again.
