Summary: How it might have been, or still be sometimes, in the dark after Sam's wall came down.
"Sam."
The kid's curled up in the corner, rocking to and fro like one of those feral orphans who'd never felt a moment's love; had only known trauma and heartache and…oh yeah, that's what Hell was like. Dean remembers it only too well.
Tries not to, obviously. But sometimes, even when awake, memory is like a riptide that can't be stopped.
And Sammy has no defenses. His dyke was breached, his wall brought down.
Dean drops to his knees, wraps his arms round big shoulders and tries to form a living barrier against the pain.
Maybe this time, it'll work.
