The waiting was the hard part. The waiting for my name to be called, to go back into a room that I had never seen. To know if I really belonged in Abnegation.
I've always had my doubts. I'll see Caleb performing some selfless act and I would burn with shame. But I wouldn't have tried to change. I would just be the same old me. The same old Abigail. The selfish one. Even Beatrice is better than I am at being selfless.
Caleb is called. Beatrice and I wait a tense ten minutes for him to come back. When he does, he is pale and shaking. What frightened him so much? I can tell Beatrice wants to ask him something, but she stays quiet. She's called in the next group. Only, she doesn't come back, even when Susan Black does. Something's wrong. Then my name gets called, and I am led to the testing rooms. I go into room 6. It's lined with mirrors. I see my sister. Which would make sense, considering we're identical twins. A Dauntless woman in a black blazer and jeans closes the door. I see a hawk on her neck, black and white with a red eye.
"What is the tattoo for?" I ask her.
"Would you believe me if I said you're not the first one today to ask that? By the way, my name is Tori. Have a seat, get comfortable."
I moved toward the chair in the middle of the room. "Only if it turns out to be my sister."
"Ah. That's why you look familiar. It symbolizes the sun. I used to be afraid of the dark."
She attaches electrodes to me and asks me to drink a liquid. Then the test starts.
I'm in a room with two baskets. One with cheese, one with a knife. A voice says "Choose."
"No." Defiantly, I walk up to them and go to grab them both. Just then, they disappear. I hear a door squeak open. I turn and see a dog a few yards away from me. It crouched and starts to creep toward me. Without thinking, I drop to the ground and wait.
I feel something wet on my face. It's licking me. I start petting it.
"Puppy!" I look up and see a young girl. She races towards us. The dog gets ready to pounce. I fling myself onto the dog and I hit the ground. Both the dog and the girl are gone. I walk through the door. I'm now in a bus. A man flaps a newspaper in my face. "Do you know this person?" I look at the photo. And lie. "No. Never seen them before in my life." I really had a feeling that I did.
I wake up. Tori is looking at me with a resigned expression. "You have an aptitude for more than one faction." I looked at her, uncomprehending. "You're Divergent."
