As Ezra took aim at the flagpole, he felt a surge of rage run through him. He was not by nature a sentimental man, but he had watched men, some of them little more than boys, fight and die beneath that banner. He had fought beneath that banner himself, fought to protect his home, his family, his way of life.
To see it now, being used as a symbol, a justification, for a gang of thieves and bullies, enraged him.
The War was over, and those who used that most sacred and honorable banner to excuse their own crimes dishonored the sacrifices of the countless men who had shed their life's blood beneath it.
The souls of the Honored Dead cried out in outrage at the desecration, and his own honor demanded that he put a stop to it, so that they could rest in peace once again.
The men who flew that banner now weren't worthy of standing in its shadow, and they didn't deserve to fight under it either.
Lighting the fuse, he watched in fierce satisfaction as the cannonball hit its mark.
The Dead could return to Their rest now.
