Kids should be kids

‚All set to go boys!' Bobby bellowed and two mops of hair appeared around the corner, speeding through the living room, dashing into the open, through the door that Bobby had just opened.

'Slow down, we're gonna be back, stitching you two together before we even get started!' He added grumpily as Sam nearly slid off the porch after a particularly harsh shove from Dean.

'Shotgun!' The older brother shouted happily, ignoring Bobby's warnings, climbing into the truck and settling onto the seat that was way too big for him.

'No fair, Dean!' Sam huffed, crossing his tiny little arms.

Bobby Singer eyed the pair of them. In their humongous winter coats, hats and gloves they seemed even smaller than usual. He got in the truck himself and turned the key in the ignition.

Roughly half an hour later, they were standing on top of the nearby hill.

'Off you go.' The grown man said, giving Sam an additional push when his sledge wouldn't immediately start downhill. The two Winchester boys screeched and squealed in delight, racing each other, reaching the foot of the hill either on their sledge or on their asses. The first time Dean had fallen off, Bobby instinctively stepped forward to hurry to his aid but after a stunned moment of incomprehension, the boy simply got up, went to get his sledge and was back up the hill for another round in no time. After that, Bobby didn't really need to do anything. He occasionally cheered for them or scolded them when they were bickering. But for the most part he just watched, happy that these boys could forget their everyday life for one short afternoon.

When John had dropped his sons at his place two weeks ago he hadn't expected to be a babysitter for this long. Bobby had enough work to deal with without watching out for these two troublemakers. On their first day together, Bobby told the boys to keep busy, enjoy themselves, explore the area or relax. As long as they kept out of his way he didn't really mind. They had both looked at him as if the word 'enjoy' had been alien to them. At first he had shrugged it off. Yet as days passed by he had started feeling sorry for the little buggers, whose idea of distraction and relaxing was work or training. He had come to realize that they had probably never done things normal kids did. When the first thick layer of snow fell during the second week of the boys' stay, he decided that their horizons needed to be broadened.

'Damn you John…' He muttered under his breath as he watched Sam's and Dean's red cheeks and bright smiles.

'Look Bobby, look!' Dean shouted before trying to snowboard on the sledge. An attempt that failed miserably. Sam burst out laughing and even the old hunter couldn't suppress a grin.

'Bobby,' Sam looked up at him, big eyes and adorably messy hair. 'Is dad gonna be here for Christmas?'

Bobby's heart sank. Thank God Dean was out of earshot.

'I'm sure he will kid.' He replied, his good mood suddenly dampened.

'Alright you two, one more time and then we'll head home!' He shouted and added. 'I'll even make you your favorite dinner…' As a preemptive strike so th boys wouldn't protest too much. It paid off as he saw Dean's face light up instantly and even Sam's little legs carried him faster towards the car, the promise of a full belly too irresistible. Bobby scratched his head. Now if only he could figure out what their favorite food was…
