Sam was getting ready for a normal day at the ED, she had just put on jeans and a comfy jumper whist fixing her hair into a messy bun. She was running late so didn't have any time to eat. She set off for the ED on her bike and got there just as her shift started. She quickly placed her scrubs on and got to work. She was assigned to a girl, Demi, who had been admitted after fainting at school. She ran blood tests and a CT scan to see what the problem was as there was nothing visible to her.

Back in reception about a 14 year old girl came in with an older woman who was presumably her teacher. The girl was dressed in leggings and an oversized 'Holby' jumper and was holding her arm. Noel asked for a name in which she shyly replied Aliona Nicholls. He recognised her, she was the spitting image of someone but he didn't know who. He told them to take a seat and that someone would be over soon to check out the arm.

Sam had just received the results from Demi's bloods and CT. The bloods showed nothing abnormal but Sam noticed that something wasn't quite right with the CT scan. She had an idea and was about to get a second opinion when she started fitting. She was stable within a few minutes and so Sam went to ask Zoe's opinion. Zoe agreed with Sam that it was a severe abscess on the brain. It was life-threatening and she needed surgery as soon as possible. She called neurology and lucky they could take Demi now as the surgeon was free. She went straight up to neurology for surgery to remove the abscess.

Rita called for Aliona to come through to cubicles after a short wait as the ED was quite quiet. Rita asked for the name as she needed to chase up the results and so the teacher replied Aliona Nicholls. Rita sent Aliona to x-ray to see what had happened to her arm. She was looking through her notes as she needed to call her next of kin. She called the number and it went straight through to answerphone so she left a message,

'Hello, this is Rita Freeman, one of the nurses at Holby City Emergency Department. We have your daughter Aliona here as she has hurt her arm at school. I just wondered if you could either get here as soon as possible or ring me back. Thanks, bye.'

Alionas results came back and it was clear that she had fractured her lower arm, very common in children of her age. Rita went over to the child and told her that she had called her mum but she didn't pick up. Aliona just nodded whilst Rita reeled off the information about her arm. Rita said that she would have it in a splint for a couple of weeks and have to visit physio afterwards. Aliona just said ok even though Rita wasn't sure she was taking it in. An hour later and Alionas mum still hadn't appeared or rang and Demi was still in surgery after a minor complication.
