Resistance.

I turned around, laughter ringing in my ears. Standing before me was Draco Malfoy, smirking as always. He'd just tripped me, and lucky for me I fell into Dean's arms, who was standing nearby at the time. "Listen, ferret-" I began calmly, dangerously so.

"Or what, Granger? You'll hex me? You'll fall?" he interrupted, snickering, eyes daunting.

I was about to yell and scream and threaten him until my throat was sore and we'd ended up in a duel, sprouting odd limbs and scars all over the place, but Snape had to interrupt.

"Get in! You're late, all of you!" he barked.

Everyone scrambled inside, leaving Malfoy and I outside, alone. I glared at him, and after a stony movement, went in, Malfoy slowly following behind.

"Listen up. Today's lesson is resistance. Every metal is different with the flow of magical current allowed to pass through…"

I drowned out Snape's voice and let my eyes roam. They landed upon Malfoy's, who were staring into my own. I suppressed a shiver from chilling my spine. His steely gaze was almost mocking. He tripped me. He embarrassed me and he knew it.

But no… there was more to it. Those silver blue eyes were challenging me.

A staring contest?

Hardly.

It was a statement of defiance. A question of power. I stared back, unblinking. My eyes were stinging, and I could feel them watering. But I wasn't about to let him win. I didn't want to see another smirk on his face.

"Let's begin with some familiar materials. Silver. It's low resistance of 1.5 x 10'-8. compare that with gold and aluminum that nearly double it, or iron, that has 10 times its resistance…"

Once again I tuned out and continued to stare, notes long forgotten.

His eyes were constant; maintained, controlled concentration; moving only the slightest to look into both of my eyes at once.

Which, quite frankly, is hard to do.

I noticed his eyes were more a silver hue than the general blue, and I wondered if no one's noticed before. I found I rather liked it. The thought made me smirk slightly.

I guess my smirk confused Malfoy, because it cracked his steely front. (Note, a mere crack. It takes a lot to break Malfoy.) His eyebrows knitted together, only slightly. Just subtle enough for me to notice.

My smirk grew.

A flicker of something crossed his eyes, but to my dissatisfaction, only for a second.

His silver orbs probed my fiery brown ones. Finally he blinked, eyes flickering to the board.

My eyes widened.

Did he… was he admitting defeat?

Well, it seems Snape is right, after all.

I leaned back and grinned, satisfied.

Silver does have a low resistance.

Author Notes: Well, what do you think? I got the idea when I was doing Physics homework, and I saw that silver has one of the lowest electric resistances… so then this story happened. Short, one-shot.

Oh, come on. Don't tell me you never had a fierce staring contest with the guy you "hate" but really love? Really.
