Konan raced through the trees, a badly injured Pein on her back. As always the Akatsuki leader won the fight, but he did not get out unscathed this time. She sighed, realizing that unless she tried to help her 'God' he would not make it back to the base alive.
Konan knew little about healing jutsus. Kakuzu was the medic for the Akatsuki and Jiraiya-sensei had never known any. He had said that his female companion was the medic. She did how ever know how to treat wounds the easier way.
Pein opened his ringed eyes. "No need Konan. When this body fails I will awaken back in Amegakure." He let out a rattled breath, "Gods do not die.
"No. This body is important. You need it." Konan retorted, unfastening Pein's cloak, "And how you do know if you will go to another body? Not one of them has ever been mortally wounded while you were using them."
"Yahiko's dead Konan. Let the body die."
Konan pursed her lips. Her cool demeanor was breaking. "As long as this body is alive so is he." She finished unbuttoning her partner's cloak, using a kunai to cut his mesh shirt off to reveal deep bruising, "You should have used the body for tiajutsu."
Pein did not answer, his still open eyes looking blankly up at the sky while his lips began to turn blue.
"Cardiac Arrest." Konan mumbled shakily before performing CPR, "Come on. Don't leave me too." She rested her head on his chest, sighing when she heard is heartbeat. With that she elevated his legs and began treating the rest of his wounds.
--------
Pein awoke, finding him self still in the forest. "You did not let the body die."
"I couldn't." Konan replied, her chin resting on her knees.
"Konan, Gods do not-"
"bYou are not a god/b!"
Pein turned to look at his most loyal follower. "What?"
"You are not a God, you're not Pein!" Konan looked up at him, her tears causing her eyeliner to run, "You're… my dear sweet Nagato."
Pein looked at her with the same stoic expression, but his eyes showed something else. "Konan… I'm sorry."
"You better be. You let all that talk get to your head."
"I'll try to be more like Nagato when we are alone." Pein's face did not change, but his eyes showed the a small hint of sadness, "Is that what you want?"
Konan smiled, leaning forward until their lips were nearly touching, "It is."
They shared a kiss. The first kiss they had shared in many years.
