Hello everyone! This is only my second fic ever and I still don't think I'm very good at this lol. I deleted my first fic because I hated it but I decided I want to try and write a different one. Anyway this will follow my OC through the story and obviously I will deviate a bit from the canon, hopefully whoever reads this enjoys it. Thank you!
-Background Info-
Ryuji Miura was thought to be just an ordinary kid, at least whenever you compared him to most others in this superhuman society where 80% of the population had some kind of amazing power, or a striking physical characteristic. Some people had physical powers such as strength enhancement, or it changed their physical body to resemble something like an animal, such as a shark or a dog, or possible harden their skin, like steel or rocks. Others had powers to control different elements such as water, fire, or ice. Mental powers such as telepathy or energy control also existed and were powerful in their own way.
Ryuji envied these people, they all had amazing quirks that made them super powerful, and he didn't think his was special in the slightest bit. When he was 4, he one day woke up, and he could suddenly hear almost every single thing going on within miles of him. His quirk had developed and he had gotten super hearing, which was amplified to the point where he had to start wearing noise cancelling headphones all the time to balance it out so he didn't get migraines that were unbearable. His quirk was called, "Amplification" and it allowed him to hear everything within a two mile radius and judge how far away something was, along with the speed of said object was with pinpoint accuracy.
He always wanted to be a hero, he admired heroes his whole life, just like any other kid in this society. His all time favorite hero that was his idol, was All Might, the symbol of peace in Japan. When Ryuji was a kid, all he wanted was to be a hero just like All Might, so he always hoped he would get a quirk that would allow him to complete that goal, but unfortunately, he wasn't sure his hearing was good enough to accomplish his dreams. But no matter what, he was never going to give up.
His mother was not sure her son's dreams could truly come true with a quirk like his, yet whenever she asked if he had considered changing his plan for the future he said, "Mom, I swear that one day, I am going to be the world's best hero! Someone who is as good as All Might! I want to save everyone that is hurting, and let them know that everything will be okay, and that they will be okay!" All she could do is smile at her child and offer her unending support and love. She knew that one day, he was going to help several people, one way or another. With that declaration, he became determined to become the world's number one hero, no matter what.
*Timeskip: 10 years*
Ryuji woke up and hit his alarm by his bed. He was really excited this morning, the first reason being that today was his first day of middle school, the second being that it was also his 14th birthday, and the final reason being that his mom was making his favorite breakfast to celebrate the special occasion.
When his dad had left him and his mom, they had moved to a small apartment since they didn't have much money after his dad left. Yet he and his mom both were happy just having each other, and if Ryuji was being honest, he was glad his mother had left his dad. But that was too upsetting for him to think about on a day such as today.
He got up and went to his bathroom to shower and get ready for the day. After showering and putting on his new uniform he looked at himself in the mirror. He had a somewhat pale appearance, sky blue hair that covered some of his face and went down to just above his shoulders, blue eyes to match his hair and he also had his signature blue noise cancelling headphones that he wore every day of his life.
He walked into the kitchen and sat down at the table while his mother was preparing breakfast. "Today is the big day mom. I officially start middle school, just one more step before I make it into UA High." Ryuji smiled while imagining getting into his dream school. "If I want to be number one just like All Might, I need to make it to UA."
Ryuji's mother smiled at him, "I'm sure that you will make it if you truly work hard and give it your all. Happy birthday Ryuji." She brought him his breakfast and then sat down and started eating with him. "I just hope your first day goes alright… Do you think you will make any friends at this new school?"
Ryuji's smile faltered. "I will be fine mom… it won't be like last time, I promise. I will be okay."
The truth is, he had been bullied pretty badly at his old school, mainly due to kids always making fun of him being scrawny and a nerd, or about how he always had to wear headphones that people constantly reminded him looked stupid. A few cruel people actually broke some of his old headphones sometimes, which immediately caused him to get painful migraines due to his extraordinarily advanced hearing.
To put it simply, because of the bullying and his father's abuse, Ryuji had deep seeded depression, and some days it was hard for him to even function, but he decided that he was going to be happy and strong for everyone around him, so that hopefully he wouldn't let anyone ever feel as sad as he felt.
He finished eating, got his bag, and then hugged his mom goodbye before heading to his new middle school. Once he arrived, he tried looking for his class but got lost in the new building. As he was walking he was not paying attention to his surroundings and accidentally ran into another student. "Oh, I'm so sorry, are you okay?" He asked to the girl he had accidentally just knocked down while reaching his hand out to help her up.
"Yea, yea, I'm fine." She looked up and smirked at him, "Nice headphones kid, quite the fashion statement." She grabbed his hand and stood up. "So, are those headphones just for show, or do you use them just so you can ignore people?" She said in a teasing manner.
"Actually… I need to wear them due to my quirk." He said with a frown, believing that this student was making fun of him just like others had in the past. Noticing this the girl just punched him playfully on the arm. "Hey man, no need to get upset, I'm just messing with you. I actually like them, they look cool." She smiled at him genuinely.
Ryuji smiled, "Thank you… Oh my name is Ryuji Miura, but you can just call me Ryuji, I'm not too big on formalities. What is your name, if you don't mind me asking?"
"Jirou Kyouka, and it's nice to meet you Ryuji. Although it would've been nice if our first interaction hadn't been you knocking me down." She laughed. "So, are you looking for your classroom or something? You seem kinda lost."
Ryuji nodded and told her what class he was looking for. "Ah no way man, we are in the same class. Come on, I can show you how to get to class." As they began walking Jirou looked back at him, "So those headphones are for your quirk? If you don't mind me asking, what exactly is your quirk?"
He looked at her and smiled, "My quirk is called, "Amplification". I essentially have superhuman levels of hearing. Whenever I take off my headphones, I can ear anything within a two-mile radius. I am able to locate the exact position of anything within that radius, and I can tell how big or fast the object is that is approaching. But the drawback is that due to that amount of noise, my brain cannot handle that much stimulation and I get a terribly painful headache after about 5 minutes. That's is why I have to wear noise cancelling headphones at all times. They basically allow me to hear on the same level as normal people."
Jirou stared at him in disbelief, "I have advanced hearing too, but nowhere near that powerful. I almost don't believe you, would you mind giving me a demonstration?" She smirked at him, wanting to see if he was telling the truth.
Ryuji sighed, "Ok, but just this once." He closed his eyes and took off his headphones and listened to everything around him. "There is a man outside the school walking along the sidewalk out in front of the courtyard at the front of the school. He is talking on the phone, and I am guessing he is a successful business man because his watch sounds very expensive, all the gears inside of it are brand new, plus his conversation is about his network marketing company that he claims is doing very well. Based on the speed of his footsteps he seems to be in a slight rush, I'm guessing he is late for a business meeting."
Jirou stared in amazement as he was describing the man, because she was easily able to see an identify who Ryuji was talking about, yet the man was so far away that the only way he could've known he was there was if his hearing really was as good as he said it was. "Alright man, I gotta admit, I am a firm believer now. That's kinda amazing."
Ryuji quickly put his headphones back on and winced, feeling a slight headache. "It's nothing that great… I just hope that this helps me save lives someday." He smiled at the thought of being a hero that saved lives and made people happy.
"So, you wanna be a hero? I want to be one when I grow up as well. Who knows, maybe we will work together in the future?" Jirou laughed as they finally reached the classroom. "So here we are, our new prison until high school, hopefully it won't be too bad." She punched Ryuji playfully on the arm, "You're my first friend here so we have to try and get through this together, got it?"
Ryuji was surprised but then had a small smile, "Yea, friends." He looks at her and smiled back, "Of course, we gotta stick together if we want to survive this place."
As he sat down at his desk and thought about how he would be here for the next few years, he looked out the window and smiled. 'I did it mom, I actually made a friend. Maybe this place will be better after all' he thought to himself as class began to start and he began taking notes, determined to do his best so he could get to UA High.
After school Ryuji walked out of school but stopped and turned around once he heard Jirou calling out his name and telling him to wait up. "Ryuji wait up man, you mind if I walk with you? I wanna ask you a few questions."
"Sure, I don't mind." He said as he kept on walking, "So, what's on your mind?"
"What made you decide that you wanted to be a hero?" Jirou asked with genuine interest.
He looked at her and smiled, "I want to be just like All Might! I want to be a hero who saves people with a smile and be able to tell them that they will be okay! That there is no need to feel sad or afraid. I want to make the world a happier and easier place to live."
Jirou looked ahead and smiled, "You're such a dork, you sound like quite the All Might fanboy. But that certainly is an admirable determination. I'm sure you will make a great hero. Where do you plan on going for high school?"
"UA High of course! I wanna go and compete and train with the best of the best. What about you?"
Jirou smirked, "I want to go to UA too, so it looks like you will have to compete against me in the future when we both make it. I can't promise that I will let you win."
"I wouldn't want it any other way." After some walking they arrived at the train station, "Well I have to head on home, see you later!" Ryuji said to her as he smiled and boarded the train to head home.
Once he got home he sat down at the kitchen table with his mother, "Hey mom, I'm home!" His mom looked at him and smiled, "So, how did school go today? Any good news?"
Ryuji looked at his mother and smiled, "I did it mom… I think I finally made a friend."
"Really?! That is amazing sweetie!" His mother exclaimed as she got up to hug him. She let him go and looked at him, "I have a good feeling about this new place and this new school."
Ryuji hugged her and smiled, "Me too mom… me too."
