Summary: What if Lily Evans had magical sister, what would happen to Harry? Katherine Evans is a kind, caring and loving girl and when the devastating event of Lily's death occurs, will she raise the child as her own or will she be overcome by grief for her sister?

CHAPTER 1

A hush fell over the crowd as everyone took their seats waiting for the first years to enter. Lily Evans was sitting at the Gryffindor table at her second welcome feast, her nerves building as she waited with anticipation along with everyone else in the Great Hall. Just one year previously she had been one of those scared first years waiting just outside in the Entrance Hall, now she was a second year, back for another year of learning and building her artillery of spells. Like most people she had made many friends that she would cherish forever, but she had also discovered that there were people who she would give anything to hex. The majority of that group were four Gryffindors in her year who irritated her and refused to follow any rules. How they were not expelled by now she couldn't understand, and that was surprising because it was only their second year.

Finally what seemed like an eternity later to Lily the large doors swung open and Professor McGonagall entered with the first years trailing behind her. Lily lifted herself in her seat slightly to try and identify one of the students in the pack, she searched for a young girl with bright red hair identical to her own. When she finally spotted her, she was glad to see that her eyes had glanced toward her for that brief moment. Lily gave her a smile and the young girl responded with a small wave, her anxiety, Lily noticed, was far greater than Lily's own.

McGonagall read out lots of names which she couldn't help herself to forget, because she was concentrating too hard on not missing one name. Students were being sorted into all four houses and as Maybel Dirgent was sorted into Hufflepuff she heard a whisper from behind her.
"Oi Evans!" the noise was made from a young boy in her year with untamable black hair that goes by the name James Potter. He was sitting at the other side of the table a few seats down, Lily ignored him. It wasn't until he'd done it a few more times did she give him her attention, but only to put her finger on her lips and say.
"Shhh, watch."

Her head snapped back to the front when she heard the name she was waiting for.
"Evans, Katherine" McGonagall said and a young girl with long flame red hair walked up to the stool, sat down and made eye contact with her sister, green to green, at the Gryffindor table before letting the hat drop over her eyes. It was only a minute before the hat called out "GRYFFINDOR!"
The Gryffindor table exploded with cheers, but the one clapping the hardest and the loudest was her sister.

Young Katherine Evans skipped over to the Gryffindor table and sat in between her sister and another first year who was sorted before. Hands were being shaken, introductions were being made and hugs were going around, then the noise died out as McGonagall called out the name of the next first year. When the sorting was finished and the welcome feast appeared in front of their eyes, shocking all of the first years, conversations all over the hall erupted.

"Katie, you made it into Gryffindor, mum'll be so proud!" Lily said beaming, Katie's eyes that had been shining moments before welled with tears and a sad frown appeared on her face.
"I wish Tuney would be that happy as well, you should have seen how she treated me when you left for school with Severus last year." Severus Snape was in the same year as Lily, but was placed in Slytherin. And for the past year and a half, had been a good friend to the girls. However, their sister Petunia did not seem to like him very much.
"It's alright now, you're here with me, you have nothing to fear and this year and the next seven years are going to be so great!" Lily told her sister and Katie noticed that as she pushed her other sister from her mind, she cheered up and the night was fun for both of them.

"Don't be a sook Katie!" Lily said as they were walking down the hall towards the portrait of the Fat Lady, behind which the entrance to the Gryffindor Tower was hidden.
"I am not being a sook!" Katie protested, not thinking about how it would ruin her argument she stamped her foot, which caused Lily to smirk.
"No, now you are being a child." Lily said, turning to face her sister. "Why are you acting like this?" she added.
"Because we're all leaving Hogwarts in a couple days and you're never coming back!" she stated sadly, it was true. Lily was now in her 7th and final year of Hogwarts and the school term was coming to its end.
"But I have to come back next year without you, Hogwarts will not feel the same without you there, how will I survive Lily? How will I survive?" she said quite dramatically throwing up her arms and knocking the books in Lily's arms to the floor. Lily sighed and bent down to pick them up and called up to her sister.
"It's going to be fine, you'll have Cooper and Josie and even Miranda, you'll never get bored or stuck on homework and I'll write all the time. Now if we can just drop our stuff off, we can go for a walk around the school, I only have four more days left of it and I want to remember it before the boys get to it." she said laughing at the end.
"Remember Lils one of those boys you're talking about is your boyfriend!" she said nudging Lily as they started walking again.
"I know, don't remind me! 'Licorice Wands'" she added to the fat lady, and they climbed into the common room.

The first of September the next year came around much quicker than Katherine would have liked. After weeks of spending time with her sisters, Katherine was preparing to make the journey to Hogwarts by herself for the first time. As the time of her departure grew nearer, her mother grew more anxious, insisting that she check and double check she had everything she needed.

Dear Lily,

It is so weird not having you here, it's only the first day and I am missing you so much. It is also so weird to be at the top of the food chain, with every one looking up to you and there are no older students there to boss you around. I don't know how you managed this Head Girl thing as well as everything else you have to do. I mean seriously, it is hard! Managing it and the mounds of homework they're piling on us, I think I'm going to die when exams come around.
Hope to hear from you soon, Love you!

Katie

Dear Katie,

I'm missing you too, it is so different to go to a job every day instead of school, even when it's a cool one like mine. Also when have older students ever bossed you around? (Except me, but I don't count 'cause I'm your big sister.) Being Head Girl is easy and so much fun, you get to give people detention. I mean... it is a lot of responsibility and I did not mistreat my authority... much.
I love you so much and will write again as soon as possible!

Love Lily

Dear Lily,

You're not joking, it is really fun to boss people around and not really get bossed in return, I mean the teachers still reign all powerful, but I'm like their second in command, and it's awesome. I might not write for a little while now, my work load is getting pretty heavy, what with all the homework and seventh year stuff that you no longer have. But I'll write when I can!
Lots of Love.

Katie
P.S. I'm glad things between you and James are going well. Yes I hear things! And by that I mean that Mum keeps me updated.

Dear Katie,

Hmm yeah I seem to recall that they liked to pack lots of work into this time of the year. Also I don't know what Mum has told you, but believe none of it… unless it's about the fact that James and I are engaged! 'Cause that is so true! And we're going to have it in the Christmas Holidays so you can be there, 'cause I can't get married without my Maid of Honor there. That's right I want you to be my Maid of Honor!
Can't wait to see you to tell you more. Love you Lots!

Lily
