She had her head bowed and hid her face from the class. Matt stared from his spot, feeling worried.
Since when had he ever worried about Caroline Forbes? He thought to himself, surprised by his own thoughts. She seemed to feel his eyes on her, and she peeked over her shoulder to him.
She smiled shortly, which was so not-Caroline like. "Hi matt," she whispered, sounding reserved, and almost like Elena. "Are you ok?" he felt himself asking.
She bit her lip. "Fine," her voice was suddenly raspy and choked with emotions. She quickly whipped her head away and stared down at her notebook.
Ever since she had been with that Damon guy, she's seemed more messed up and not right. It scared Matt to be honest, though he had little association with the blonde.
But it was in Matt's nature to care about everyone. Later after school he caught Caroline walking alone.
He quickly caught up with her and asked her the same question. She just stared and stayed silent. The intense staring contest seemed to break Caroline.
She fell into his arms helplessly crying. "Why does everything have to suck for me? I mean why can't it be just perfect," she whimpered. Matt rubbed her back soothingly.
"That's how life is Car. You have to learn to deal with the bumps in the road," he said wisely, resting his chin on the top of her head as she had her head buried in the crook of her shoulder.
"But why does the bad stuff happen to me? Am I cursed or something?" she said, pulling back to stared at him with her heart shaped face that was currently stained with tear tracks.
"Car. Come on, you know you're not. Just stay strong," he felt lost at words. She smiled shortly. "Why are you so nice to me Matt? I never deserved any of this," she said in disbelief. "Everyone deserves a comforter," he shrugged.
She leant up and kissed him on the cheek. "I think I'll be ok for now, but thank you Matt," she whispered, a small smile across her lips. Matt felt himself in a daze and nodded ok.
He watched as Caroline walked away. Caroline was in quite a daze as she walked away. Matt Donovan was her comforter. Something about him just made her feel better.
She didn't know what it was exactly, but she was glad he was around or she'd fall apart without his support.
