She runs towards him, her fake smile plastered all over her face as she embraces him in the grey snow. His brief look into her eyes tells him all he needs to know. She doesn't really care. Its all an act put on for the Capitol and their ways.
The next time it is her who looks into his eyes, as they discover that they will be going back to the arena. She sees his eyes start to water as he comes to terms with what they are now faced with. Seeing tears fall down his face, she runs away and hides.
When he finds her curled up in the basement once the sun has risen again, he carries her-still sleeping- back to her house. He hides outside the door, watching until she wakes up. He smiles slightly as he sees the confusion in her face as she finds herself back home, instead of in an empty house.
Once she meets Finnick she notices something about him too; she recognises someone whom in different circumstances could have been friends with her. But she pushes away the thoughts of their similarities and focuses on how she would kill him inside the arena. After all, Finnick Odair is another tribute in these games. Just another victim.
At the interviews, they both find themselves blanking out their emotions so that the other tributes can't read their faces. Every emotion blocked from surfacing. Fear, anger,sadness,pain,love-
She pushes the very idea of out her mind and wipes clean the chalkboard that is her expression.
Months later, they are finally free to show how they feel in their faces. And Gale asks her why she never showed emotions before and she explains everything to him. But she knows that his smile is fake. She can see it in his eyes.
And after all, the eyes are the windows to the soul they say.
